    What’s up y’all?

    2021 Tacoma v6 auto 2wd

get a clunking noise when shifting from reverse to drive. Dealer says they can’t replicate it. It does it about 70% of the time. This is all on flat land with no incline. I’ve read a lot on here that these trucks make a lot of noise was just checking to see if the rest of y’all have this noise.

Are you lifted with aftermarket UCAs? If so, the UCAs might need to be retorqued or checked.

    Clink clank or clunk?
    Clink is brakes.
Clunk is tranny or exhaust. Need a helper to listen.
    Clank can be steering.

Set parking brake. Does it go away.

Definitely has something to do with transmission. Might be normal though. Not sure

    Sure it's in the shift? R-N, N-D, D-N, N-R...all the above?

Sure it's not front brake pad slap?

I was excited about this thread but mine has a clunk when actually rolling in reverse from park. Yours is much different. Please keep us posted.

Between the transmission, drive shaft, and axle, these is going to be a bit of slack that will be taken up when you move from R to D and change the load direction. I would bet if you jack the rear off the ground and rotate a wheel back and forth you will hear some noise from the ring and pinion. The question is whether it’s normal or excessive. Zero lash in those systems would result in excessive heat and wear. Every mechanical system will have clearances and those clearances can result in sounds as they cycle.

mine does similar. When I back out of my garage, if I shift from R to N and let the truck sit for up to a minute, then shift to R to back out of the driveway, the drivetrain takes up all of the slack (which these have a lot of) and it is kind of a violent jerk going into R. It doesnt do it everytime, and I dont think theres anything wrong with it, just the powertrain and rear suspension taking up all the slack. In my opinion. Oh, and the truck is an AT. With no mods.

I have a 2021 Tacoma V6 SR/SX 4x4 that makes the same noise as yours. I have noticed that if I apply heavy break pressure, it gets a little better. If I only apply enough brake to hold the truck still, and no more (like every other car/truck I have owned), the noise is louder and the truck will actually lurch a little going from R to D. Mine does it worse after a drive (when everything is warmed up), in my garage on level ground, and less when the car is first started in the morning.

I wanted to test drive another 21 Tacoma to compare, but with the shortage, that ain't happening. I did find a 2020 pre-runner on a lot with 10K miles that I drove around to compare. It did it slightly, not near as noticeable as mine. Others may trust the dealers, but I do not, and would not take mine in for this, as they will simply tell me its normal. My plan is to drive it, and use the warranty if something does break.

    ***Updated 08/30/2022***
Even though I was originally against it, I took mine into the dealer as the clunking started to concern me. I provided all details and video of the noise and the service tech agreed that it was quite pronounce and should be looked at. They had the truck all day, and when I got it back they said it was COMPLETELY NORMAL.

Not the "normal" I want in a new truck, and I've also been very unhappy with jerky shifting with the auto trans, so I did the only other thing that I could do.... I sold it! And due to the unusual used car market we are currently in, I got every dime that I put into this truck, back... and then some... ;-)

Maybe I'll try Toyota again down the road...

I just purchased my 2019 SR5 V6 this weekend and I noticed the exact same thing. Didn’t know if it was worth going back to the dealership about or not just yet. Mine is also more noticeable after it’s warmed up.

Late reply, Yo I have the same 2019 sr5 v6 got it fully serviced and all at toyota they did what I asked and they said they have had a lot of dudes come in with the same tyranny question with the clunk and said it's a "quirk" of the truck and shouldn't cause any issues or concern lmao

I just brought mine in today for this same noise same delayed "clunk" into drive then a delayed loud click like sound. Last night it actually was making a very loud(first time) metal to metal noise when shifting into drive... that's what brought it to my attention and definitely made me not want to drive it. Its only got 3k miles on it, a 2022 trd OR. Of course today at the stealership and on the way there the loud metal to metal noise wasn't happening but just the same(new different) noise that the op posted in his vids. Still, it wasn't there prior to the lconcerning loud metal noise. They first said if the service Forman doesn't hear it then we can't take it to inspect it... they accepted it to inspect the noise. They definitely were trying not to hear it... @taco_man any update on your issue/noise?
