Hi All, over the last couple of days I have had to hit the accelerator hard to get my Tacoma 2.7L to move. The truck revs up to 4000 rpm + before moving. Once I get up to 40 mph then the truck runs well. If I need to accelerate I have to push the accelerator hard. The truck revs high then moves. Is there a fix other than going to a mechanic?

The e-brake is not on, she has over 290K miles and is a manual.

Sounds like your clutch is ruined.

With manual??? I assume you release the clutch way before that? That is impossible for do that with normal functional clutch and manual transmission on the gear. If you have 4000 rpm and truck is not moving and clutch is released and you are on gear you have slipping clutch that badly, that you are probably followed by the cloud of smoke. If clutch is OK than something is missing (transmission, differential) or you are driving without tires on railroad tracks.:)

Normal "take off" rpm for me (the rpm when I have clutch fully released) is between 900 and 1500 rpm.

Thanks everyone. One last question before I get the clutch. Is it ok to use after market parts or is the OEM the way to go? Just asking because there is a huge price difference.

I wouldn't go out and replace the clutch just yet without figuring out what's wrong. If the clutch is slipping, the harder you pushed on the gas the more it's gonna slip. And you would smell it really bad

Aftermarket parts are fine for the clutch. You may not get the high Toyota Quality but life span/wear will be negligible.

Easy test to confirm the clutch is toast is to put it in first and sloooowly release the clutch without touching the throttle. If it does NOT stall or shudder, then your clutch is not engaging and you now get to replace it.

LUK is a good, cheaper brand in general. Replace everything while you're in there: clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing. Get a kit that comes with all of it.

I agree. Doesn't scream 'clutch' to me.

If the description was that you were rolling in 3rd at about 2000 RPM and mashed the gas, and RPM jumped to 4k while barely accelerating, sure. But 4k to get moving in first? Seems really odd.

I'd be looking for something else before jumping. You say the ebrake is off, but have you actually checked the drums to make sure they are not bound?

Exactly, if the clutch was slipping and you revved it to 4K to get moving, even once you were moving it would be so toasted you'd know. But in the two clutches I've had go bad neither was like that, anything low load like starting would never make it slip, it would be at speed if you tired to lug a gear that it would slip
