Retro Handhelds

Anybody playin with any of the new handhelds that play the old games? I picked one up in early Dec, so I could take it on our family trip to Disney World...used it on the flights to and from home...I've really grown to like it. It's the Anbernic RG35XX....looks like an old school Game Boy and plays NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, tons of Arcade games, Sega, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx, PS1/PSP and many more consols. It has a mini HDMI out, so you can use it on a monitor or TV...unfortunately, this one doesn't have Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, but he Plus version of it does.

I've flashed a new OS on it, themed it and of course, I had to 3D print some mods...charging stand, new shoulder buttons and a grip. I throw this in my backpack and carry with me...on the days where I have to pick up my daughter from school, I end up sitting in a car lane for 30+ mins, so this sucker comes out. I'm planning on getting another one that will do the N64 and PS2 games.

also my GBA SP which i reshelled, battery upgrade, and screen upgrade.







and my original Switch which i reshelled after getting the Zelda OLED edition.

Thinking of getting the Miyoo Mini Plus for my niece's 11th birthday. Do you think something like this is age appropriate for children or will it be too complicated for them to figure out the interface?

The Game Boy's 35th anniversary is next week. It was released 4/21/89 in Japan and 7/31/89 in the US.

 

you might be able to put a different theme on it that makes it a little easier to navigate.
Retro Game Corps on YouTube put together a really nice guide for it.

 

I'm working on a collection of the old school handhelds for my daughter and I to play with. So far, I was able to acquire a Game Boy Advance from a generous member on here....modded it....already had the Game Boy Color, but don't really want to mod that one because of the great condition. I modded a Game Boy Pocket for a buddy and he paid me with a DMG Game Boy, it really good condition...but I think I will upgrade the screen on it. I am still in search for a GBA SP for my daughter...she really wants one. Once I can get my hands on one for a decent price, I will re-shell it in her favorite color.

 

Been playing my retroid pocket 3 quite a bit recently, enjoying some totally legal to me ROMS!

Anybody tried the funnyplaying fpga gameboy color kit yet? Thinking about picking one up. It's a steal compared to the analog pocket. Already modded my original gbc with the IPS backlit screen etc but playing crystal on entirely new emulated hardware is a pretty cool prospect.

I've really been thinking about building one of thes FPGA ktis....but would rather get an old GBC and just upgrade it a lil.

Bit the bullet and got the FPGBC kit... Very excited. Pretty wild to have a GBC with totally brand new hardware. Will update on the quality + pics when it shows up.

Would like an analog pocket to do my GBA games too, but can't justify spending the $$$ on that right now.

 

I replied ced the original display with a new IPS display... Wow. I kept everything else original.

 

I need to do that with my DMG; my Play it Loud is much more clear than my grey DMG.

Yeah, kind of mind blowing how much more enjoyable it makes it now.

 

Yeah... This thing rocks!! For the money I don't see anything better. I much prefer this to my modded out IPS GBC with the original motherboard.
- Updating the firmware is incredibly easy. Just drag and drop
- Audio is spot on with no stuttering
- The full screen aspect ratio looks great on the IPS screen (Can adjust the aspect ratio in the on screen menu)

I still have my DMG Game Boy, GBA and NES GBASP but I've shelved them. I'm about the Analogue Pocket. It just gives og GB games a new life.
