I had the stock tacoma tonneau cover that came with my truck for a couple years and recently went to a SnugTop camper shell and I'm loving it.... but for where my build is going I'm not sure I'll keep my topper for much longer which is kind of sad.

After much research and thinking about my future truck build goals, I think something like this (first photo of cement tacoma) would be better. So with this, who has something similar and what has your experience been like? Any recommendations or would you do anything different if you started over?
I do mountain bike so this setup I came across on here is ideal.
For the cover, I'm looking at the GatorTrax cover and the RetraxOne Mx cover. If I go crossbars, it'll be Thule or Yakima and if I go full bedrack route, I'm not sure...

I have the Retrax One XR with Rhino Rack crossbars. Works great and I’ve had a James Baroud RTT on there for the summer. Bonus is I can take all that stuff off the truck and still use most of the bed (you lose some space for the canister it rolls up into)

That’s awesome. Sounds like what I want. Roughly what has everything ran you? Also, did you install yourself of have a shop do it ?

Absolutely can’t recommend this setup enough. I can’t even really think of any drawbacks- short bed folks may have an issue but the canister does not reach the floor. for longer items etc one could tuck it under.
Its easy to install, just needs two people bc of the size itself going on the truck.

Regarding the rack itself, I started with the Yakima Outpost HD but ditched it after a month. Wanted a lower profile for ease of reach getting bikes up & down.

The last photo is my current setup. Had a truck cap for years and installed the Yakima tracks with skyline towers with Large Corebars. So glad
I kept all the parts bc the same setup worked here with the Retrax.

The whole setup (cover & rack) will ballpark around $2k. Hope my info helped!

Dang that a sweet setup. That's basically exactly what I want. So the bed cover comes with the slots integrated in already to just add the racks from what I see correct?
also, those racks can be locked in to prevent them from being stolen yeah?

    Appreciate it!

And yes- both XR versions do. You can choose either the polycarb (one) or the alum. (pro) cover material. Same rack load capacity for both.

The yakima skyline towers have the locking core template but have to buy the cores separate. You can get a pack of 4 to pop in for about $30-$40 I think?

Just another example... I went with the Retrax ProXR with 58” Yakima round bars to accommodate the bike rack. 58” is a PERFECT fit if you don’t want the bars to hang out past the towers. I didn’t have them on in these pictures, but the bar end caps did fit on there with some minor modification. (Had to trim the edge of the cap a bit to clear the tower latch mechanism)

Another sweet setup. Damn, I'm getting more and more excited about going this route. I'll keep all that in mind because I don't want the bars sticking out too much.

So that's the difference... ok interesting. So which one did you go with? and why would one go with one over the other besides price in your opinion? is there that much weight difference ?

I went with this setup from undercover. It’s not a roll up. It’s a flip up

Ok so maybe I'm overthinking it or stupid or something but wouldn't you have to remove the bars to fold it up all the way?

I had a Truckcoversusa tonneau with the factory installed Yakima tracks and it was stout enough for my mtn tandem

Been looking at moving to this same setup (ReTrax & Overhaul) - do you have some pics of the Retrax when it is fully opened? My only hesitation is the space the canister takes up in the already short bed. I used to have a Softopper and even that annoyed me when it was folded down.

They are tough to get fully airborne but with 7” up front, 6” in back, the long wheelbase, and a girlfriend that’s an ultra runner and as crazy as I am it is a hella lot of fun on the trails. It’s not uncommon for people to stop and watch us bomb by.

Now to REALLY blow your mind: it’s my design and the center comes out to convert it to a single mtn bike. Check out peacepedalers.com

I have the RetraxOne XR. The cover alone can take a 200lb load capacity, while the RetraxPro spec is at 500lb. If you live somewhere up north and deal with snow or work in construction, it's recommended to go with the pro. Since I live in the South & am an engineer parking in a garage downtown, the polycarb met my needs.

i measured a while back. With the Retrax fully opened, you have 47” of bed.
