Crankshaft went bad from being sold the wrong oil filter and it coming off on the highway. Check your part numbers. Anyway sounded like a 2010 would plop and drop in so I bought one. Made a post on a fb group and people saying I’m going to run into wiring issues. Anyone have experience with this. From stuff I read before it sounded like it was a direct swap but now getting mixed reviews. Any other advice is welcomed this is my first engine replacement. Thanks!

The engine is identical, I always recommend using all of the wiring and electronics on your truck if possible though as manufacturers can sometimes make small changes such as pinout changes on certain things over a production run. This can cause a ton of headaches if one isn't aware.

Toyota is pretty good about not doing this but I still don't recommend using the wiring harness off a donor engine.

Super awesome thanks! Identical as in all the plugs are the same or just the block? Sorry if that’s a stupid question. I’m definitely planning on using the wiring harness that’s on my truck currently.

Sensors and connectors are all the same so yes it should be plug and play, the only changes to the 2nd gen Tacoma 4.0 base engine were changes to the cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds to accomodate Secondary Air Injection in 2012.

The reason I reccomend using the stuff from the stock engine especially if you have a known running engine is you know they are all good and working.

With a used engine you don't know if it had any issues or not unless you could hear it run prior.

Whew that puts my mind at ease. Truck runs great besides the knock from the crankshaft so all electronics should be good I think. Also would not want to run a new wiring harness. Super appreciate the help! This is what I was thinking when I bought the engine but then some guys on fb made me nervous as that tends to happen haha

You should be fine, what has gotten a few people is the early (04-05) 4 Runner 4.0. The cam sensors and reluctors were different from the Tacoma 4.0 but the Tacoma 4.0s were all the same aside from the cylinder head changes in 2012.

Make sure to take a look at the knock sensor wires under the intake on the donor engine, it's a known spot rodents like to chew on.

Ok yeah that makes sense. The one guy was getting an engine from an fj or something. I’ll check for chew marks too! Thanks!

Yea the early FJ 4.0 was the same as the Tacoma but it was changed to the dual VVT version around 2010. Same thing with the 4runner, the 4.0 in it was updated to the dual VVT version in 09.
