Replacing A750E transmission--advice needed

My transmission went out on my 05 Prerunner.
Local transmission shop wants $4k to rebuild it, and it will take two weeks.
I got a mechanic local here in Athens, Ga who is cheap and reliable who will put it in for $350 if I get the part.

So my question is: what's the best source for this transmission?
There are a number of places online like Street Smart, Car Part Planet, and Powertrain Plus who offer rebuilt transmissions--mostly for around $2300 shipped. Most come with 3-5 year warranty.
Any of you have experience with these kind of places?

On the cheap side, there is an A750E on Ebay for $1200 shipped that came off a 2012 truck with 68K miles. First, would an A750E from a 2012 fit my 2005?
While researching this issue on TW, I read somebody say that
"There were 3 total variations of the A750E in the 2nd gen tacomas."
Would I be crazy to go buy a used transmission?
Of course there is a lot less guarantee with this one. I'd almost be willing to spend the extra $1100 bucks for the 3 year warranty, but who knows.

I'm planning to keep my truck for another 227k miles. I love it and want it to run for a long time.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

IDK, a quick search showed a new (factory reman) at EB Toyota (Boch) for $2578, a few hundred to ship. There were others in that general range. I would consider that in your mix as you would get a factory warranty.

I got my A750F with 55K miles for $1070 shipped, 6 month warranty from partcycle.com. Actually got a few parts from there. Service was great. There’s a few A750E’s on there now for $1070 around 50K miles. I wouldn’t recommend ebay.

Sorry can’t help with your other questions but I originally had a 2013 A750E and put in a 2015 A750F, generally it’s better to use the same year or higher. Toyota made changes in the later years

Don't go reman, really trans only put 200$ of parts into remans at a shop. Really a big money maker, and you still have a almost all the parts that are worn, they only fix it enough to get it to work..
I'd recommend a factory reman, or just used. Really all the recommendations already were great for finding used.

Will your local shop install a used one from a wrecking yard? Some shops partner with yards and the yard offers a warranty including labor if it fails prematurely.

This is a good option too. Also it’s not that hard to install a transmission yourself in your driveway. I did mine in 3-4 days, I have a write up in my conversion thread. Just throwing out another option
