    Hey guys I was looking for options on where the best place to get a replacement 3.4l engine would be. Im just about to hit 300,000 miles and the engines getting worn out nd tired I think. I dont have much power and I've definitely been hard on the truck. I've looked at the JDM motors and they look nice but I'd be a little nervous not knowing exactly how many miles it had on it. I've also seen JEGS has a remanufactured long block for around $3,500.00. So just looking for other options. I live in the middle of nowhere Wyoming or I'd just try hunting around junk yards haha. Thanks!

    take a look at www.car-part.com for a recycled engine. I've heard good things about Jasper remans but I've never used one.

    You should look at this thread.

    Edit: Here's another thread with some more options. SP Precision are on sale...seems like a very good price.

    The good old days 100 miles one way to a Kmart .

    In the seventies we had Trucks from Salt Lake City 3 days a week

    It comes down to what is in the budget ?The real Question is it time for a major restore where you put $15,000.00 into the truck to warrant a fresh engine

    Have you checked what can be had local ??

    How much oil do you burn in a day? How much coolant do you add every day ??

    How many codes would you pull if you wanted to ??

    Is rebuilding your engine an option ??

    This is just my hunting and beater truck so it still works for what I do with it but with the money I have into suspension and other add ons I definitely want to put another engine in. Budget wise I could put a new engine in but if I could get one for 2k instead of 4 I'd obviously rather do that so thats why I'm looking for other options people have done. As of right now the engines ok, doesn't throw codes or eat to much oil, just doesnt have power. I'm at the point I'm just going to run it rather than keep putting preventable maintenance money into it though (timing belt replacement etc). This is more a post so i have an idea of what I'm going to do when it eventually does quit.

    For remanufactured, see if there is a distributor for Jasper Engines anywhere close to you. Largest nationwide according to their website. They have a great reputation and 3yr/100000 warranty.

    @bowhunter13

    BTW, I live 50 miles from the Jasper home/manu plant, so those replacements are really common in my area. I have heard nothing but good stories about them.

    Around $26,000 worth of unleaded in the fuel tank.
    I would probably go with a JDM used motor for around $1000. They are low mileage and I'm not too keen on rebuilt units since many things could go wrong during a rebuild, plus if its rebuilt something probably failed on it prior to rebuild and may have caused unseen damage.

    I had my mechanic source a used 3.4L engine with 130K from one of the local junkyards & delivered to his shop for $1,200 with my engine as a core exchange and 6 months warranty over 2 years ago. I had a blown head gasket, burning a quart of oil before the blown head gasket, and was leaking fluid/water with the blown head gasket. I was pouring water into the engine to make it to the repair shop, but the truck made it there without leaving me stranded.

    What was the labor cost to install the motor?

    Total cost for motor installation, new radiator/water pump/timing belts, fresh oil & coolant, and tune up was about $4,800 with 6 months warranty on the engine & 1 year warranty on the labor. It took him about 2 weeks for the engine swap/install. My mechanic is a former dealership mechanic so he used all OEM parts when needed. It might be expensive to most of the mechanically inclined DIYers on this forum, but I didn’t have to deal with doing a rebuild on the original engine block or knew of anyone who could help do an engine install properly. Something to consider if you intend to keep your 1st generation Tacoma for a long time.
