Installed some new dash speakers today. Factory stereo, SR5, non-JBL.

Replacement is on the left, factory on the right in that first photo.

Seemed like quite a few people have used these in automotive applications so I figured I’d give them a try. I used ********* speaker harness adapters.

Started with the passenger side, popped off speaker cover and used a 10mm wrench to get the screws out.

Replacement FaitalPRO dropped right in and lined right up with the holes. Secured the screws down and popped the cover back on and tried some A B listening while adjusting the balance on the stereo. Definite improvement.

Now, on to the driver side. The gauge cluster hump provided some problems, as the new speaker with four points of attachment couldn’t lay flat. Either cut the tab off the speaker, or Dremel down the area it would occupy.

I chose to use a Dremel with a sanding drum to make some room. Finally got it to fit. Screwed down the other two mounting tabs and we’re in business. Speaker grill popped back on with no problem.

They are being powered with the recently added Beat Sonic plug and play amp. Highs were a tad harsh, so I knocked the treble and mid bass in the fader/balance.

Overall, prettt happy. Cutting out the dash took the most amount of time. Just be careful with a spinnysander tool around your delicate pieces. Use two hands. Wait for the bit to stop before moving it.

I personally would have just cut the 1 mounting tab off the speaker, using a thin cut-off disk...
All good though, you got it done..

I needed to consider possibly having to send the speakers back if I didnt like them.

I didn’t take the job of cutting into my dash lightly. I was very careful, and since it didn’t really effect any kind of structural integrity I went with the sanding bit. :|

Good job, glad it sounds better.

Just curious, but from the looks of it, couldn't you have just slid that one speaker corner tab under the dash plastic piece while installing, instead of dremeling out a slot for it? I know you wouldn't be able to screw that corner tab down, but I'm wondering if it would have made any big difference.

I tried getting that to work, but when screwed down, the speaker frame would push up on the dash and wouldn’t allow the grill cover to seat flush.

Doing the same in my Taco. I hate that manufacturers can't at least give you polypropylene coned speakers. I went with Rockford Fosgate for my speakers and I'm going to see how they sound without an amp but I have one if need be. I'll just have to yank it out of my Camaro, LOL.
I did the speaker surgery instead of cutting on my Taco though. I also took the R/F logos off of my speaker grilles and re attached them to my Tacos speaker covers for that important "Bling Factor", hahaha.

Crutchfield is where I got my corner speakers. Actually everything thats going into the truck is from crutchfield, but the rest of the R/F speakers and amp are coming out of my Camaro since I am selling it.
    FB_IMG_1731040276921.jpg
Anyway, here's the link to the speakers I am using. Since the dash corner speakers are used as tweeters and run inline with the 6x9's in the front door I went with single cone speakers.

Dont shoot the messenger but someone needs to do their dd....
    Not the best option....
If you going to keep the stock amp config, factory speakers are 3ohm & the RF's are 4 ohm.
Also im 300% certain the factory dash speakers are 3.5" & that RF & the OP's speaker is 4", will most likely not fit correctly along with wrong load, won't be very loud..
a 4" speaker in with the wrong ohms isn't going to do anything special for you vs a 3.5" 3 ohm...
Not a good / optimum option...

These below have been posted in Bobs thread, multiple people have used them, they work & are the better option for this situation,
    You're welcome...
This speaker is also available on AMZ.

I'm not trying to be "loud", I am improving the sound quality. The R/F does fit. The resistance is not an issue with a LOC and small amp.

At least with other Toyota JBL systems, I found that the dash midrange was overpowered, so switching to a less sensitive aftermarket speaker in the dash accomplished two things:

    1) quieted the midrange and achieved better tonal balance; 2) gave better audio quality than the stock paper cone and tiny magnet voice coil.

Doesn’t look like a fit without some hacking…
    Stock speaker is 3.5”….
It’s clearly not a fit per your pic…

I'm not going to argue about this with you, but I will say this: you are dead wrong about the fit. I didn't have to cut a damn thing and the grille fit over it just fine. I have no idea why you feel the need to call me out when you are wrong. I backed my claim up with a picture and all you are providing is argument for the sake of arguing. I'm done with this conversation.

I just removed the dash speaker. It is very cheaply made and I can't tell how many ohms and what a good replacement speaker is? I See it has a special plug also with 4 pins. If you know what is a good replacement let me know. Thanks.

I would talk to some knowledgeable professionals in the field before pulling the trigger on some speakers.
Not very familiar with the non jbl amp.
    Call crutchfield tomorrow...
    You need a plan...
Are you adding an amp or not?
If you think your not & then buy speakers now, decide your not happy with the results, the speakers you chose may not. be wroth of an amp...
You can go to cructhfields website enter all your vehicle info & browse..

I would get the JBL's I mentioned, dont go crazy & spend alot of money.
Also find that post where they guy links them, as you also need the speaker connector adaptors so wiring is easy.
Important to get the polarity correct...
I would also call or email beat sonic before going crazy, dot you I'd, cross your T's.
No idea if the BS is up to the task of replacing / upgrading your speakers.
Its a tiny amp, designed to power-up those tiny minispeakers.
Not saying its not doable, just saying ask Eric & see what he says..
