    Hi!

My transmission output shaft seal is leaking on my 2014 Tacoma dclb, as is the transfer case input seal, and transfer case rear output shaft seal.

Toyotal dealership said he can fix all for $780

Is that reasonable? I'm currently traveling, and have no way to do this myself.

    Thanks!

Transmission Output shaft seal is like $10 and an hour of time. Super easy to do. I can't comment on the transfer seals, but if they are like the transmission...

I've nowhere to do this work - I'm living in my truck camper and traveling. This is a dealership I used to go to.

3 seals leaking on what is probably a low mileage Tacoma? Sounds a bit fishy to me.

I have a Four Wheel Camper slide in camper on it full time, dunno if having that weight would affect the seals tho?

67K IS low miles for a Taco. If it's not leaving puddles everywhere you park, I would get a second opinion from an independent shop.

Other than extra heat in the trans from hauling the load of the camper, that shouldn't make any difference. Hopefully you have a trans cooler and a Scangauge or Ultragauge to monitor trans temp.

I would look under and verify leaks.
If leaking I would go to another shop ( small mom and pop type) and ask them to verify.
Never, never, tell them what the other shop quoted Maybe even don't tell them unless the previous one is less $

I took it to a local place that has great reviews on Yelp.
They looked at it and said that only the output shaft seal needs replacing.
Still a lot of money - $550 (most of that is labor, of course) but it needs it.

Got a quote from a local transmission place - they quoted me for all three seals $1190! That's about $400 more than the dealership! Whoa.

Tcase input seal seals the shaft between the trans and tcase. Normally how I have found them as failed is that the tcase ends up overfull, due to trans leaking into it. Externally it is rare to see the fluid actually make it out of the housings. Do you know why or who initially diagnosed it? If they drained off the tcase during the inspection then the other shops wouldnt easily be able to diag it as failed without really paying attention.

I also find it very strange that all of a sudden all drivetrain seals failed. I hope they checked the breather valve to make sure it isnt plugged.

    Hi PPF! :)

Toyota dealership was saying that the other two seals weren't failed, but I think they said "seeping" (vs. "leaking").

I'd taken my Taco to the dealership to get oil changed, partly because I knew they'd do a complete inspection of drivetrain etc. (If I'd known about this other place, I woulda taken it there. Der. I was just traveling through town and hadn't researched local places. Boo me) Anyway, in the work-up, dealership said that the output shaft seal was leaking, and "while they have it apart" it made sense to also replace the other two that were "seeping" some. Meh.

I'll ask the place tomorrow to double check the breather valve. Thx!

I see you are here in Arizona, don't know if you are open to the trip, but call up Toyo-Works here in town off hatcher and ...7th st I think.

Othwerise, a few members and a case of beer could maybe get this done for you.

I'd love to, but I think it's too hot still in the Valley to come down. I've got two dogs traveling with me (a heeler and a shih-tzu).
I have an 8am appt for tomorrow up here in Prescott, tho I'd much rather get someone happy in beer for the help.

I've been on the road (this time) since July, and have been heading to check out New Mexico, but between this and some solar issues a couplea weeks ago, I think the universe wants me to stay in AZ....
