I have a 2015 Tacoma SR with a solid glass back window. Has anyone replaced that back windows with a slider? If so, is it possible to replace with a canopy in place? My canopy back window folds down.

I recently put on a canopy for my dogs. The canopy back window slides and folds down, but my truck window is solid. The dealer said that they have never heard of anyone replacing the solid glass with a slider.

I don't know what the canopy you describe is or looks like, but the window can certainly be replaced with a slider.

Once again, some chucklehead at a dealership passes out bad intel, based on what they 'assume', instead of looking into it.

However, you are actually lucky. I'm sure their price would be outrageous. Talk to the body shop manager, and ask what the cost would be.

Then call an automotive glass shop and ask the same.

Then ask the glass shop what their labor would be to replace the window if you brought one to them.

'05 up should all fit, and finding a used one might not be too difficult if you have a few wrecking yards in your area.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I called 2 dealers, both with different answers. One said that it would cost me $850 for the glass alone. The other said that it would not do the work because it would void the warranty.

I think that the auto body shop would be the best route here. It shouldn't cost nearly a Grand to get this going right.

The previous images was an inside shot the canopy, showing the fold down window with access to the cab window.

Here's a shot of my Snugtop HiLine canopy that I just installed.

My bad. I've always called those 'toppers'. To me a canopy is something else, not even related to trucks

I only suggested the body shop (dealer) to get grounded in silly pricing, so you'd know when you find a deal.

Yes, you can shop an independent body shop to do the work, but I'd look to automotive glass places. Ones that do windshield replacements, side windows etc.

Yes, the 'canopy' will have to be off for the work to be done. Front and rear windows are designed to remove outwardly, not inwardly, as they rest in a 'bed' molded into the body.

Not suggesting you buy here, but it will give a more reasonable idea on parts cost. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/toyota-tacoma-rear-window

the sliding back window is very expensive, both from the dealer and aftermarket. I broke mine a few years ago and had to get it replaced. You won't be able to swap it out with a cap on.

I had a solid window that broke from firewood hitting it. I'm replacing it with a breezer window. At least it will be easy to fix if I break it again.

Expensive indeed .. as of April 2015, dealership has the rear window with slider (privacy) at $886.19 without tax. Can't wait to see what installation will be.
