I'm interested in figuring out pall park prices for some painting. I graduate college in december and have a pretty nice internship this summer and would like to fix some of the major paint issues. I don't want to buy a new vehicle when I graduate considering my tacoma is an 05 and my dad has been the only previous owner. It has 208k miles and probably at least 195k have been highway only miles. Now to the paint, the roof and hood are absolutely awful. The hood is the first attached photo and the second is a little closer to where you can see how bad it is. IMG_3743.jpg IMG_3744.jpg Next are the hood pictures and they're not as bad but still pretty bad. IMG_3747.jpgIMG_3748.jpg. Here are a few misc shots and this one is around the windows on the doorsIMG_3750.jpg and here is the front bumper IMG_3746.jpg. My dad had this tacoma while he was in the navy and had several deployments of it being roasted in the sun for 9 months on base while he was away. Without any of the misc painting I was thinking to save up $1000 for the roof and hood. If anyone could give me some advice on what to do that would be greatly appreciated. I don't want this to end up being a huge money sink if the roof and hood get repainted and looks like ass just from the general wear and tear on the rest of the truck.

You are at the point of a financial dilemma. If you just paint the hood and roof, it's probably going to be about $1,000 and the rest of the truck is going to look like crap compared to the new paint. If you get a Maaco paint job, it will probably be $500-$800 for the whole truck. It will look fair for a few years, and then it will start looking really bad. If you want the whole truck painted really nice quality, it will probably be $3,000 to $5,000. I'm sure there are shops that will do a middle of the road paint job, but they're going to be really hard to find. It might be worth a trip to Mexico.

That's what I was afraid of. A new paint job will look good on the parts painted but will look terrible in comparison to the older paint. Only other thing i was thinking was maybe paint the roof and see if I could find a hood to trade of similar age but better paint. Beyond that I'd hate to get rid of a great truck over the paint.

Rhoman, My 07 lived outside and near the ocean for 7 years. The roof and hood, as well as the fender flares clear coat failed. I had all that painted by a good shop and it was 800.00. This was in 2014. The tops of my doors also show some issues and I bought some duplicolor matching red paint and have done an area along the driver's door with pretty good success. It matches well enough and will extend the life some. I considered wet sanding the paint and applying a camo paint job. I have seen several and they look cool but are not for everyone. When I responded in a paint thread about my issues and the camo, I caught hell from several members who thought I should just paint the truck. At the time it would have been 3K. In your case a less expensive paint job may be the best solution and it will perhaps last 3-4 years if you wax the heck out of it. Another option is if you are near a community college that has auto repair/paint and body courses you may find one willing to paint your truck if you provide the paint. Ultimately, my truck will receive a camo paint job.

My hood paint is starting to go along with the front fender flares. I already have primed the roof. I will be doing a complete respray of the entire truck in a few weeks. Not looking forward to doing the work but it must be done.:turtleride:

Are you painting yourself? I don't have the means to do that and would probably have to bite the bullet. I'd rather go in $3k+ for new paint all around rather than a car payment for years.

That'll have to be stripped down to bare metal and then have primer, color coat, and clear applied. Do you have a local technical high school near by? I know in CT they'll take in jobs like this for the kids to learn on. I had my old Dodge Cummins painted at a technical school in Torrington CT. Same issue, paint failed. It was $1350.00 to strip and repaint. Came out good but it did take a couple months.

Yes, I can't justify paying 3k for a respray when I have the knowledge and equipment to do it. By no means am I professional though. Just your average cheap ass with a bunch of tools :D

If the truck is solid and safe in every other way, you are making a great call for your financial future.

I'm facing a similar dilemma with an '04 Highlander that is a great vehicle and a lot less miles than yours'. (In terms of the overall vehicle, not my financial future)

If you mostly city use the truck, I'm thinking a Macco paint job. With a little attention to detail, it will get you by for a few years and look decent a few feet away.

If you're going to do some off roading, consider a DIY version of a product like www.monstaliner.com. It doesn't have those rubber bits in it like other bedliners, so it makes a smoother, easier to clean surface. And they have colors, and I think you'll find one 'close enough' to yours that the door jambs and underhood won't look too weird when you open them.

Gonna be honest with you, the truck needs a full repaint. That truck's paint is in such horrible condition you will never be able to blend the repainted panels.

Others have said it, but I think their prices are wrong. I think you are looking at closer to $1,500-$2,000 to repaint the hood and the roof. You have rusting which means a couple of things 1) additional labor to sand down, prep, and prime the rusted areas and 2) you are at risk for the area re-rusting under the new paint job. Even the best body shops cannot 100% promise no rust after their repaint. This is why you never allow vehicles to become rusted.

You are probably looking at $6,000-$7,000 in a repaint FROM A REPUTABLE BODY SHOP. You can go cheap but you take a major risk. A guy on here just did a partial repaint through Macco. Spent $2,000 but I'm willing to bet $2,000 in about 1-2 years that paint job is going to start flaking and fading and he's going to rue the day he ever allowed a bumper repaint place to touch his truck. I could be wrong but body work is an art and you get cheap you will get cheap.

Also others have thrown this idea down and I like it... Line-X (bed liner) the whole truck for around $3,000.

If you go to Maaco get the ‘Premium’ two stage paint that comes with a 5 year warranty. If it starts peeling (and it probably will), you just take it back and make them fix it.

I just had my roof repainted, as well as a dent removed from the side of the bed that required a full repaint of that bedside. The bill was about $1100. But that did include the dent repair as well...

I just had my 2007 roof and hood repainted. Same roof and hood issue I’ve seen on a lot of the black Tacomas. I paid $625.

Why not take it to a couple of places and get real quotes? People guessing on the internet won't give you the answer.
