I know this is a lot to ask but I’m looking to borrow or rent a shell for my 2018 short bed tacoma. I’d like to use it for a road trip coming up in mid June.

I really don't want to purchased a shell because I really don't take many trips and I try going to my local shells store to see if they have some for rent......and they don't.

I’m located in Memphis,TN area, thank you

Check around your local car dealers and see if they have any takeoffs from trucks that were traded in. Also check craigslist and such. Since you don't plan on keeping it, you might find something that wasn't perfect but worked well enough for cheap.

Are you planning on sleeping in it, or storing luggage?

    Neither.

    Buy a Softopper.
A fraction of the cost of a paint matched shell but easily storable in the garage (or house) when not in use.

Oh damn, I love that part of CO.

Reason why I ask is that there might be cheaper, easier alternatives to getting a shell.

I use contico boxes, I've had them for years. They're weatherproof, portable, and lockable. A pair of those with a set of matched padlocks, and maybe a good bike cable to keep them from getting lifted out of your bed, and youre good to go. They make great garage storage when not in use also.

Alternatively, shop Craiglist for the next few months and buy a shell if it's priced right. Then turn around and sell it for the same price after your trip.

Rent it for a week local rate, they don't need to know where it's going, but you have to pull it both ways.

I got a nice used ARE topper for $600 on craigslist, I know I could sell it for that if I wanted to.

If a tool box might work you could hit up the pawnshops and buy a Jobox, use it then turn around and resell it after your trip.
