If I'm going on a trip where a truck is required (camping, offroad, etc) I drive the truck. I've rented cars before for long highway trips and it works out from an MPG perspective.

I drive beaters around town usually to keep the "on-road" miles on my truck down

I've heard that too! Thats funny bc I do the same with my vehicle.

My wife always tells me if I stared at her half the time I stare at my truck I wouldn't always be in trouble. Can't help my truck has nice curves!

Depends on the situation. If we had 5 people and we were going a long distance, I’d consider a rental if a reasonable price as it would be more comfortable.

Unless, that is, I'm bringing more than one person with me. I only have a regular cab!

    Sorry to hear that!
My sister passed when I was 17, I’d give anything for one more convo of any sorts. Which is actually where my entire mindset changed. I want to travel and see and do as much as I can, because you just never know when your time is up... Just wish my dad would get over the mileage thing! He always knows how to make me feel like a bad car owner lol

If I own a general purpose vehicle, I'm taking it on the trip. If I have a more specialized vehicle, then perhaps it's not a great traveling vehicle.
I had a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata. It was great for less than 30 minutes. Beyond that, it was awful for me. The drone of the exhaust, the cramped seating position, the wind noise, etc. I loved driving it on weekends and even to work during the week.
My wife and I traveled from VA to NY in December several years ago for a funeral. Our vehicle options were:
    2003 Ford Ranger supercab
    2004 Mazdaspeed Miata
    1999 Nissan Altima (200K miles)

We rented a car. I didn't see the Ranger or the Miata as acceptable road trip options for 2 people with multiple sets of clothes in the snowy time of the year going through the mountains of Pennsylvania.
The Altima was just getting up there in miles for such a long trip in lousy weather.
The upside of renting a car for this particular trip was that my wife was already eyeing a new Sonata. I called around to local rental car places until I found one that had one available that I could rent for the week with no out of state or mileage charges. We got to take it on a really long test drive to know for sure she liked it before we bought it.

You do have the advantage of not having to worry about it if something happens to the rental car...however, you're also a big hamstrung by that. you're at the mercy of the rental car place or their preferred servicers to get you towed, recovered, etc. It might not cost you any money, but it's going to cost you in time. If you're in your own vehicle, then you get the first tow truck that can get there and not worry about it.

When I'm traveling, my time is probably more important so I want to flexibility to address any issues in the most expedient way possible.

I absolutely love taking my own car on road trips. There has always been something special to me about seeing a city through my windshield that I had previously only flown to. Now when I look out my windshield for the drive to work, I can picture the skylines and vistas I've seen through it. I think there is a greater connection having driven there in my own car. I still remember seeing the Vegas skyline for the first time in my Tacoma. It was a special moment.

On the other hand, a few years back a buddy and I rented a drop top Corvette for a week long road trip. Pulling up to a campsite along trucks and SUVs in a corvette, taking it off road and getting stuck behind a honest-to-god cattle drive, and definitely not hitting 162mph on an empty stretch of incredibly straight road are memories I'll have my whole lifetime. So, sure, rent a car. But rent something fucking awesome.

I'm in the middle on this. On the one side, I love driving my truck. It's comfortable, capable and reliable, and I bought it to use it. That's not to say I don't take care of it, but it's here for a purpose. On the other hand, I have enjoyed renting some cars that I'd never own, but have a blast driving. Renting, in my mind isn't cheaper, and I definitely don't mind putting some miles on my vehicles, so it all depends on where you're going and why. 99% of the time, I'll take my truck if I'm road tripping somewhere.

    Do what makes you happy!

Let's be honest though, how much fun it is driving the hell out of a rental car? Especially when I travel for work and a rental car is provided. you can bet I'm e-braking the shit out of every turn

I did weekend car rentals about 10 or so times years ago for ski trips. Weekend rate and fuel cost of a smaller hatchback were about the same as just fueling my own truck for the trip. Saved me thousands of miles of wear and tear over the few winters I did this.

These days I just drive my truck everywhere. I enjoy my truck and enjoy driving it places.
