    Need some input -

I just purchased a 2017 Taco and it came with the tri-fold OEM cover. I really don't like it or want it. I know people have removed there's based on some of the discussions, but how hard is it to do? Dealer acted like it was a huge deal.

    Thanks!

Taking it off it absolutely simple, just take it off & post a picture of it to sell. I've helped a couple buddies buy them from other members and install them on their trucks.

You unfold it and clip it to itself. Lift the cap seal and unscrew the bolt. Lift the cover off. Then to take it a step further. Unscrew the bolts holding the rails. Remove rails. Done.

Your dealers are a bunch of lazy @sses.

I felt the same way when i bought mine, if its not in your way for anything try leaving it on for a few weeks and see if it grows on you. I don't know how I ever lived without one now. Works great for going on vacation!

I didn't think I'd like the hard tri-fold either, until I had it. I've had roll-up versions in the past and they make it so simple to expose the entire box. Yes, the last third is 'covered' and gets in the way some times but I was being lazy. I figured taking the darn thing is going to be a pain in the rectum to remove, 12mm socket and boom its off. What really impressed me is how quick it can be put back on and aligned for a good fit. I'll echo, try it out you might like it.

I had the dealer install mine... for $150.00. When I put the bed bars on, I had to remove it... that's when I discovered that it was (4) set screws, and (2) hand knobs... that's it. I am glad that this is the internet and nobody knows what a sucker I am. Dealership stealership.

    None as of yet
As others have said, I didn't like it at first but grew to love it and can't imagine not having it.

If you still want to remove it, open the cab behind the passenger rear door and take the bolt out (14mm if I recall) then open each "fold" and lift it off. Quite simply, but it is quite heavy too so get a helping hand.

Here in the Northeast, I want the cover on in the winter, but took it off in the summer to put on fishing rod racks. I don't want that snow filling up my bed. If you are taking it off permanently the 5 pins, and the bolt can be removed as well, which I did. If you have a bed liner, those six spots will be exposed - the section for the pins is cut out. Kind of worried about water, dirt and debris getting in there....

Thanks for all the input. The issue is not that I don't like the tri-fold, it just doesn't work with my lifestyle. Dirt bike and mountain bikes don't fit without taking the whole thing off all the time. The roll ups give plenty of room and are still secure.

Need to find someone "local" so we can swap Bed rails. Oregon would be a nice road trip though.... :)

The hardest part in taking it off is realizing that it costs more than $100 x2 to replace each of the plastic side bed caps for OEM ones that are not cut out. Find a local Taco owner willing to trade out caps, but more and more people are figuring the cost and are unwilling to trade in case they want to go back to having no cover or to put a shell on it.. I ended up selling mine on eBay and the buyer paid a lot for it to ship - but I would never do that again- packing it to ship was a nightmare!

Do you have a part number for those uncut bedrails?

Starting to think toyota makes more money selling plastic than vehicles. ;)

I'm guessing one is for the left and one is for the right? Nothing in the description differentiates them.

If you plug in the part numbers it says driver side and passenger side- I just copy/pasted a small part of my shipping invoice. Those are Toyota's OEM numbers for what you need.

My dealer quoted $150 each, I bought them online from the link I included. They were good about fast shipping and didn't charge too much to send them.

Oh yeah- don't forget to take off the two rubber pieces in each corner- the uncut rails will not fit if you leave them in- they go with the Tonneau rails.

    Have fun!
