So I have a 6 speed and I'm debating getting a remote start for it. 12 Volt Solutions makes a plug n play kit for my truck with the manual trans, but I'm wondering, how many of you would put a remote start in a manual trans vehicle?

The only thing keeping me from doing it is that I would have to rely solely on the E brake to hold the truck. I was also thinking about buying 2 wheel chocks that I could put on the rear tire in case it failed... Not sure if that would get old or not though. I'm used to it at work but it's less frequent that way.

What are your thoughts? All opinions appreciated.

The same shit everyone else has.
I’ve been waiting for the 12v Solutions kit to come back in stock for the past 4 months now. It was supposed to be back in stock in December but it wasn’t. Every time I email them it’s always some excuse or vague response. Their customer service sucks.

I’ve asked them multiple times what the differences between the kits were and could never get an answer.

I’m sure you’ll have tons of time to think about ordering one before they are in stock.

That said, theyre the only ones I’ve found who sell a complete plug n play kit that uses T harnesses.

I plan on installing one on my truck as soon as I can find a 100% plug n play kit in stock somewhere.

Adjust and lube/maintain your ebrake system. You should be fine.

Alternatively. Only use the remote start when parked on a flat surface.

There's no shortage of people that would do and and have done it.

That said I never would. Too much hacking to do and no matter what, I'd always be afraid to hit that start button from a distance knowing the worst case scenario. The whole scheme is just way too sketchy.

Vehicles with drum brakes have much better bite with the parking brake than the disc brake variants.

Make sure its serviced and grabs at 6 or less clicks and you'll be good.

Here's how it works. You CANNOT start it in gear unless you go out of your way.

You turn the truck off, it will stay running. You get out, lock the door. The truck will lock, turn off, and flash lights.

Then and only then can you remote start it.

The truck knows you left the truck, and the doors shut while it was running, making it 99% proof that it can't be in gear.

Some cars have gear sensors, but the Tacoma does not.

    I have a compustar one button remote installed 08 2.7 5 speed.
Installed in 2011 it’s pretty fail safe.

yea setting up the remote I
    Park
    Eject passengers
With foot on brake in neutral set parking brake.
    Remove foot from brake.
Shut truck off take keys and get out.
Truck stays running driver door needs to be last one shut.
Shut door truck running lights flash and shuts off.
After that if a door is opened it is no longer able to remote start.

can be a pain but it’s nice when cold.

Dang that sucks. Wonder who else makes one that would work without splicing into a bunch of stuff.

As far as only using it when parked on a flat surface, I would still be worried that I could accidentally hit the button in my pocket, but maybe I could just find a small hard case to keep the remote start and my keys in. Thanks for the info!

So this kit wasn't a plug n play one as far as you know, right?

    Ive got the N2 kit.

No splicing its all plug and play.

Super easy to install and even easier to use.

If im parked in any spot with a hill where i want the extra security of being in gear i do it.. just dont have the luxury of remote start in those circumstances... easy peasy.

I take it that people may not have looked into the N2 Solutions remote start kit. Watch the install videos and check out the reviews. The harnesses are P&P and they appear to be reliable.

N2 Designs 2016-2020 Tacoma 3x OEM FOB Plug n Play Remote Starter Kit (AT & MT) + Smart Module

Who says they don’t make plug n play remote starters for 3rd gen manual Tacoma’s? They do now!

I'm not a big fan of remote starts in any manual vehicle. The truck already has a clutch safety override so I don't have to depress the clutch to start it. My concern is that someone would try to bypass the switch and relay and I'm uncertain how that could impact these kits. My interpretation is that you could potentially (if you were highly motivated) leave it in gear and have it take off on you with a remote start. Sorry, but if I wanted a self-driving car, I'd just get a Tesla.

There is a "ready mode" sequence you have to do when you leave the truck so that you can remote start it. If anything interupts or changes that sequence you cant remote start it.

For instance with the N2 system you park, keep foot on the brake, put it in neutral, clutch out, ebrake on, foot off the brake. Then you hear the N2 relay click 2 times. Turn the key off and the truck keeps running. Take you key and whatever you want out of the truck open drivers door. Once you close drivers door the truck shuts off. 15 seconds later it locks the doors. Done.

After this ready mode sequence if you unlock the doors, for any reason you have to put it back in ready mode all over again which involves restarting the truck.. kind of annoying.

For me in Canada its a very nice added convenience that i use daily in the morning when leaving for work.yes it isnt as free working as the system on our honda pilot or my old f150... but its there and nice to have.

I am aware of the sequence. Potentially a moot point if the clutch start cancel switch/relay is bypassed and some minor code changes take place. There are some smart people on TW and beyond. Others simply lack sound judgement, but have the capabilities.

I'm of the mindset that a motivated individual could and would override those protections in some way, shape or form. People gonna do what people gonna do.

So does this kit actually keep you from starting it if it's in gear?

Just realized this is for 2016-2020...

    Gotcha.

Well over my head and technical ability. I'm a mechanical minded physical fabrication guy. Electronics and coding are well out of my knowledge realm.

It does, but only by using the clutch switch and the vehicle running as a means to determine whether or not it is in gear.

Yup. It will not enter ready mode if you have it in gear. You cannot leave it in gear during the ready mode sequence because the truck is running the whole time and only shuts off after youve exited the vehicle (therefore no way to put it back in gear once the door was closed)

Man I'm still seeing a few times that people's systems didn't keep them from starting the car in gear and they hit something. It seems a tad sketchy to me the more research I do.
