Has anyone found a work around for this yet? I have a remote start that I installed on my 2018 a few years ago. It works, but when you open the door the engine shuts off. I know that toyota billed this as a safety feature so that people can't hop in and drive off with your car, but that seems a bit ridiculous as most modern cars with remote starts don't have a kill switch when the door is opened.
I've searched around a little and haven't seen anything, but wasn't sure if someone here had figured it out.

Nope. you could tape the door sensor so the door is always “closed”

I'm not beneath that lol. Would you be able to put it into drive though? Or would the master computer or whatever not allow it?

I have not read of a work around in the years I have been here.
I guess I have learned that I have to press that darn start button again once I get in. It's hard, but I have finally built up my finger strength so it can press that start button twice. I then have to rest my finger for a few hours. Whew!

Lol! I'm sure your wife appreciates it. I'm more worried about engine wear and tear (maybe I'm totally off here) with starting it, shutting it off, and then immediately restarting it. If it's actually not a big deal then I guess this thread is moot.

You still have oil in the top end when you restart it immediately after getting in/shutting off, so it should only be accelerated wear on the starter for cycling it again

The computer won’t know a thing. Tape the sensor down and the truck will think the door is always closed. Biggest problem is the alarm won’t go off if they open the driver door

This won't work. It'll still die when you hit the brake.

OP think you're out of luck. It's a poor design just like our steering radio controls. :anonymous:

In my 2011 it will turn off if you touch the brake before putting in the key and turn it to run. One issue is people like my gf will put the key to start grind the flexplate...

Starter only, and starters last a long time usually. Engine still has oil in it if shut of and restart quick.

You can always try sitting in it with the doors locked, and then hit the remote start and see if you can drive it.

Nope. The only workaround would be to find an aftermarket unit that allows this and install it.

What if you left the window down and just climbed in after remote start?

It's speculated, '23 and newer vehicles with Remote Connect, will not have this bug.

That is the document referenced in the video.
The reason I used the word "speculated", is because it is not known if those select models include the Tacoma. Most probably, though.
