I wasn't scared of my parents. I was scared of what my karate instructor would do if my mom told him!

Mine was like 1998. Pretty cheap I think to buy. Service was $12 a month..for 15 minutes of talk.

Mom has a very heavy-duty paint stirring stick. About 1/4 in thick, and 1.5 inches across. Hardwood, possibly oak. It was the paddlin' stick, because "I'm not about to hurt my hand punishing you." It is kept in a particular drawer in the kitchen, which squeaks when opened. Hearing that drawer pulled open was often enough to get whatever commotion to stop.

Nearly 50 years later, if I'm at her house and hear that drawer opening, it still gives me pause. And yes, the stick is still there.

As did I, at 16. My dad in less than 3 minutes had me by the long hair on my head over his knee.

My mother did the exact same thing. The paddle was kept in a drawer beneath the stove. You had to retrieve the paddle and bring it to her to administer the spanking.

I took a belt from my Mom when I was 5yo, and then hid under the bed scrambling to keep out of her reach. When Dad got home...it was game on. I lost big time.
Yep ... that sound. I think that was maybe my last beating, last I recall anyway. Oh, I'd get the smack upside the head for many more years...call it the "attention getter."
I can do that with my sons to this day.

I'm gonna say it looks like 1970s Steve Martin doing some version of his "Wild & Crazy Guy" bit.

That's the way it was when we were kids, adults called it guilty by association.
