Can someone please tell me what this is? I have an 04 Tacoma double cab. I’ve had it 11 years and it’s been amazing. I purchased it with some mods but I haven’t the slightest idea what this is! Please help and thanks!

Oh shit! I finally know something for once.

At least I think I do. Looks like a driveline disconnect for flat towing behind an RV.

My stupid unnecessary knowledge for flat towing finally came in handy.

Makes it easier for flat towing so you don't have to unbolt the driveline. There should be a lever to engage it somewhere in the cab, theoretically.

Also makes it way weaker, not that it really matters if it is just a daily driver

It's a good idea to reserve words like "Help" in a thread title for folks that are broke down or stranded on the side of the road.

Do you have the flat tow mounting brackets on the front of the truck?

That's an expensive setup. I looked at getting one for my 5-Lug, but it went upwards of $1,000.

    Huh...that's pretty interesting.

To add to the driveline disconnect does it go to a lever or something?

Also, when people use the work "help" in a thread title it means they need help right away or urgently because harm by come to them if they don't get help immediately.

Try using a different title that describes what you need assistance with.

Pretty crazy looking contraption...I wonder how does it just disconnect the driveshaft with the pull of a lever, don't bolts need to be removed for that to happen? Or do they just stay removed and this device keeps it in place until the lever is pulled?

It's like a mechanical coupler IIRC. You move the lever, and it disengages the splined section of the driveshaft from the differential.

You can tell the driveshaft has been shortened by a shop because of the aftermarket D/S weights on it. My shortened driveshaft has the same tubing and weights.

Unbolting the driveshaft is 100x cheaper, and more reliable. This is merely for convenience for people who flat tow their vehicles a lot.

Yeah on a driveshaft where the only bracing of the design is some stamped sheet metal and rivets it is a weak design that I wouldn't trust for a second. I'd be scared to leave a stop hard. The reason you can trust it in a transmission or transfer case is because it is braced by rigid cast pieces to keep everything from deflecting.

Thank you everyone for your help and my apologies for the inappropriate thread title but I was so stuck! The truck does have a disconnect mount inside of the cab I’ll add a picture of that. It’s making an awful noise. does anyone see anything wrong with removing it and the cable? 7B9D1B9C-A6C2-41DD-9DAC-E6AAC9541A58.jpgAD31D2BA-5577-4C5F-B268-684DD55A3433.jpg 180C049F-4A8F-47B2-8B1C-87D1647B6E2B.jpg

I would remove it if you’re not using it, however it appears your driveshaft has been shortened to allow for the mechanism. Can you take more pictures of the driveshaft?
