Xtra Cab on a short wheelbase truck with a shortened bed was/is a popular conversion with older Toyotas used for rockcrawlers/extreme 4 wheeling. People need the short wheelbase, but want a little bit of room to sit in the thing comfortably too, the older trucks were very small inside.

Can it be done on a 2nd gen? Sure it can. Can YOU do it? I dunno. It's probably beyond my skills, definitely beyond my attention span/patience. A pro body shop could do it if they were so inclined, but that would cost way too much to be worth it. I would love to see it done!

The cab has various weld seams at the roof and B-/C-pillars. Toyota even sells replacement cab pieces for collision repair (for example). So yea, with enough time and money it's quite possible to do properly, with all the seatbelt anchor points, side impact structure and rollover curtain airbags intact. It will be much more expensive than trading in for an Access Cab, as others have said.

Just because you can, does not mean that you should.

Of course, if I had enough money to commission Ferrari to build custom models for me, I would. :D
