So, I'm a little torn between two options for jerry cans. And I'm not fan of Rotopax, they're more expensive, less capacity, and a pain to fill. Basically, I'm looking at the plastic Scepter military surplus jerry cans, and the steel Wavian Fuel cans. After looking around online quite a bit, they are essentially the same price- at least once you account for shipping for the surplus Scepter cans, and trying to get ones in decent condition with caps.

Steel jerry cans will be brand new, but will inevitably dent and rust, but I think they pour better. The Scepter cans are super durable, but are still surplus, but the spout needed for them is twice the price of the Wavian spout.

Any thoughts? Are there any other good (actually seals, not CARB compliant) options out there?

I am happy with the Harbor Freight Midwest cans Like you mentioned, the spouts suck. I have replaced the carb compliant spouts with ones from Amazon. Also, I typically use a siphon hose when filling my truck.

Thanks for the reply and the links. I think I missed the boat on the Midwest gas cans from HF. I can only seem find them from Zoro and Ace and Amazon, but for $70.

I'm a total dork for the original German style jerry cans like the Wavians. Reasons pro are the way the seam is around the can gets welded and coated, so they don't rust easily, they pour reasonably fast, the three handles are cool if you carry two empties side by side you have handles, you can grab the center one and pull it up out of a few of them, and they provide the required space to allow for expansion without distorting the cans (much) when it gets hot. Reasons con are they're steel and can dent, and the spout doesn't store easily with the cans.

I'm team wavian. Had mine in the back of my truck for many different trips, and after several years, haven't had problems with rust despite having the paint worn off in a few places.

Def buy the non-CARB spout though. Well worth the little bit of extra money!

I 100% agree, that's what I'm leaning towards, just trying to find a deal on them somewhere. I bought some steel Swiss cans a couple of years ago that were suppose to be NATO spec, but they were an eBay purchase, and ended up being junk. They're okay for storing gas in the garage, but that's about it.

Thanks for the great info! Is this the spout you're talking about:

AFAIK, the Wavian ones are real, imported NATO cans. Pricey, but they last.

x2 on the non-CARB spouts. You can actually use the water ones for gas as well, just paint them red so you don't get mixed up!

Wavian cans and never look back, Ditto on the good old fashioned spout though. Wavian plastic water cans however..... are absolute trash.

I already have a couple of Scepter water cans that are awesome, they'll withstand anything. That's why I was looking at their fuel cans. But I think I'm sold on the Wavian cans now, thanks.

I have them both and prefer the Wavian. Mostly because they are easy to get in AK. I have never had any issues with leaks or rust. They do have a few dents though.

I don’t use a pour spout on my MFC’s but rather a syphon.

I had the red Scepter cans, and modified them to pour faster with a flexible spout. No complaints. Ended up selling them because they wouldn't fit in the jerry can holder on my swingout. Got Wavians now, and they pour just as fast. The only complaint that I have is that I had to search and search to find a plastic flexible spout. (The metal flexible spout is probably fine, but seems too long for convenience on a lifted truck and also doesn't have the best reviews.)

    For water, I use 7-gallon cube-shaped Aquatainers.

Yeah, a syphon is definitely a lot less mess

Do you remember where you got the plastic flexible spout?

Ah yes, I should’ve said the water spout can be used on the gas cans. I don’t have the plastic Wavian cans, only the metal to plastic pour spouts.

The one I'm talking about is the wavian brand one, but it seems they're hard to find these days. Here's what I'm talking about:

I went for Wavian cans and so far I’m happy. Like others said probably not wrong on either, and may come down to availability these days.

Here is my quick mod to make the standard carb spout free flowing! I still use the original nozzle since there is not much advantage after this mod to get the extra non-carb flexible nozzle.
