Morning and Merry Late Christmas! I have one of the suggested grease guns and still can’t get it to latch on very well to the Zerk fitting on the front driveshaft. Any tried and true guns that work well? Also anybody use the red grease?

I use a LockNlube gun and it clamps on no problem. Kinda pricey though.

Thumbs up on the Home Depot gun with the flexible hose. I have never used a needle so I can't comment.
I use the Red and Tacky grease, I think it is a Lucas product.

Try your local NAPA store for one of these.
I have purchased several cheaper ones (Advance & Auto Zone) and the point wasn't made very well, for a few dollars the NAPA one works good.

These don't work with zerk fittings unless you're really steady and can pump the gun one handed while holding this perfectly on the grease fitting with the other.

OP: The grease gun business end fittings are adjustable. Have you adjusted the fitting?

Only thing I would suggest is a gun with a long handle instead of a trigger type pretty much if you have seen one you have seen them all.

Years ago aggravation trumped cheap -- I put all my crappy grease guns in a box and sold them at a yard sale, threw away the cheap point fittings and bought good ones from NAPA.

I bought a nice Lincoln brand pistol grip gun with a long hose, a quality point fitting works just fine when you aren't fighting the with a cheap lever grease gun.

OK? How does a needle fitting work on a zerk?

I used grease guns almost daily for 15 years doing aircraft maintenance. Pistol grip guns are for light duty/production environment stuff. Lever type is the only thing anyone should have in their garage if they have only 1 grease gun.

The Lincoln gun I use is a full size standard cartridge unit and has never given me difficulty with any job. I do also have a few of the mini pistol style for occasional special uses.

A good needle fitting will fit perfectly into the hole of a standard zerk. Naturally you need to hold it straight and in place.
The important part is it needs to be a high quality needle, the cheap ones are frequently too large, too rough of a finish or too poorly made (point not round) to get a good seal.

These are very convenient on U-joints, the double Cardan joint found on the front driveshaft of older 4 wheel drive trucks and also the U-joints behind the front wheels of the same older trucks with a solid front axle. Some older vehicles also had a grease fitting on the steering shaft U-joint that was impossible to lube with a standard end.
I also find it handy for the lower ball joints especially on vehicles with positive offset wheels, I replace the straight down grease fitting with a 90 degree fitting and reach in the tight area with the point.

I have been using these since I got my first Jeep Wagoneer 35 years ago.

I have one of the mini grease guns and the issue I have had is end is just too fat to fit between the yolk and the end shaft and securely connect to the zerk. I may have to try the Home Depot gun or the needle end perhaps.

I have this Lincoln one as well. It’s great. I appreciate that it has a decent seal and doesn’t allow the oil from the grease to leak out everywhere.

Try a pistol grip for a day on farm equipment heavy machinery etc. if you want to grease any thing a lever is what you need. I have even had to grease farm stuff with both hands with the gun against my leg. It's getting harder to even find a grease fitting on a vehicle any more. They even make a grease fitting tool you drive with a hammer filled with oil to clear rusty/plugged fittings. So yeah if you just grease a U joint ever so often you can even use a one handed grease gun.

I used lock&lube products for years. They have always had what i've needed whether for my vehicles, boat, tractor, or snowmobile. They make greasing easy.

I just use the Walmart special. I think it's the lubrimatic. Been using it for years with no problem. Use it from my vehicles to my lawn equipment.
