The nerf bars that came on my Tacoma are showing some rust spots, and the coating is peeling off in several places. While I’d like to eventually replace them with rock sliders, due to the cost that probably won’t happen for awhile. In the meal time I’m considering pulling them off and recoating them with bedliner or something. Has anyone done this? and how did it turn out? Do I need to sand them down first or just spray over the existing coat? Any tips would be appreciated.

Properly prepped , remove rust etc. epoxy primer then topcoat with a bedliner coating will be fine.

What’s the best way to prep them? Just sand them down?

Yes. How bad is rust? Definitely should be sanded off. Epoxy primer is the best to apply after rust is removed. Great anti corrosion coating before topcoat. They also have a bedliner coating on Amazon in a rattle can it’s called raptor. Great product. Been using it for years. Automotive painter here. Rattle cans are like 40 a can. If you have access to compressor I would suggest using air compressor. Both work well

Just refinished my bed racks. Used the spray gun kit. Nice tight texture with this stuff. Does not lose gloss from UV’s either. Great gloss retention.

Wire brush the rust, then sand it down. Spray some self etching primer on, then put a couple coat of bedliner spray paint on. I have used the rustoleum one from home depot.

Do not use self etch.Sand rust. You can treat with a surface treatment then Epoxy primer.
