So, I start the truck this A.M. and I get a slapping sound coming from just above the cabin air filter...I can feel the slapping on the black plastic housing. Eventually, I push the recirculate cabin air button on the air conditioner and the sound stops...so, when recirculate is "on" the sound stops, when I push the button to stop recirculating air the slapping sound starts and stays constant.

Is there a fan associated with the recirculating system, just above the air filter?
Haven't looked yet, but, can I remove the front of that housing unit to get a better look at that area?
Why would the slapping sound happen when system is turned off?

    Any help?

    Thanks, Stephen

Sounds like the recirculate door actuator has failed and is ticking, the actuator moves a door on the HVAC inlet that changes it from outside air to inside air and sometimes the gears strip out and cause a ticking sound.

Yeah, ticking is a better description. How complicated a "fix" would this be? Would the dash have to be removed? thanks

On some cars you can access the actuators without pulling the HVAC box out, sometimes it has to be removed. Either way just make sure the door flap has its full range of movement before installing a new actuator or it will strip out too.

Look for an obstruction holding the door flap open, or a broken hinge

I would start by pulling your glove box and then your cabin air filter to see if it doesn't have a stick or something stuck in it that is moved out of the way of the fan when the blend doors are open.

Then I would pull the blower out and clean it and every bit of the HVAC box you can reach, if that still doesn't fix the tick then yeah you're probably going to have to replace your blend doors which will require pulling the dash to get to AFAIK.

Air inlet servo would be my guess?

Yes, I'm pretty sure it can be acessed behind the glovebox without removing anything.

Yeah, I think TNshooter has it right...Air Inlet Control Servomotor. Took the glovebox off to get a good look at the area. Used a mirror and flashlight to inspect the flat surface of the front flap and check for trigs and stuff. Looked clean. Didn't see any gears on the armatures (much the as same windshield wipes), per say. Only seems to effect one of the two flaps. Real tight in there around the motor--no surprise. Going to be a real pain to get in there without removing things, and proper tools. Though, I think I should inspect the plastic armatures (gears) before I order a new motor.

If you are talking about the air inlet control servo the servo can be done in situ. Someone has even located an aftermarket servo. If I get some time later I will get that info for you. If you don't hear back bug me with a PM or tag me.

BTW, all 3 of those servos can be replaced without pulling the dash or HVAC unit. The problem is usually inside the servos as their gears are very poor plastic and fragile as potato chips. They are easy to mess up internal indexing of the gears as well so don't open one of the motors.

If you pull any of the servos (motors) just be careful about wanting to mess too much with the underlying cams. The air mix (aka heater control one) is pretty safe, but be especially careful about mode control one. It is very easy to get the flap pins on the arms of the control levers off track and out of sync as the cam actually controls 3 internal flaps each with a different track on the cam. That one might require pulling the HVAC if you mess up indexing. So leave the underlying cam alone.

It could be something as simple as a leaf in there -- I've had that happen before with a clicking sound. Remove the leaf and you're done.

thanks, Taco'09, will be watching for additional posts from you.

Stuck Sucks, ticking/clicking sound coming from the close to me flap. Used a mirror and flashlight to inspect the surface area of the clicking flat (just one of two) and didn't see any obvious obstructions.

Am I correct that the picture of the F04007 socket hole is not 4 square sides, and thus, would auto-synchronize the sorvo with the armature?

    5.5mm socket? Geez!

Every actuator I've seen exept Chrysler/Dodge stuff is keyed to the door so it can only be installed one way.

Not really sure of the question but in Post #27 of the other thread I linked above I clarify it is a 7/32" socket, 1/4" drive.

I had this exact issue within the last year, and it was the servo motor. The hardest part about the swap was reaching in to the dash to make the change. The link posted above for the thread here is what I used as a guide.

The part came in the mail this A.M. Set about installing it. TEN MINUTE JOB, IT WAS NOT. That space around the actuator was not meant for xxl size hands. Anyway, got it put in, and cycled it...works.

Thanks to everyone that contributed. This is a great resource.
