I’m selling my old tires, they are recapped BFG All Terrain 285/75/16 with about 6,000 miles on the recap. They’re great Offroad and around town, not so great on the highway. I’m asking $275 for all four tires. If anyone's interested, next Sunday, July 7th, I will be driving up I-95 from The Georgia border all the way to Virginia.

^ Re-treading a tire to give it a second life. Hence why OP said not great to use on highway.

Exactly, I bought these from Tire Recappers in Nashville. Tire recapping has come a long ways, but still aren’t great highway tires. I ended up driving more highway miles than I thought I would, that’s why I replaced them.

Why are recapped tires not good on the highway?

Because they have had the old tread removed, and a new tread vulcanized onto the tire casing. They will never balance as well as new tires fresh out of the mold.

Like @gilligoon said, they just won’t balance as well as new. They’re fine around town, but not so much for long highway drives. For anyone who doesn’t do much highway driving you won’t find a better deal. If you do a lot on the highway I wouldn’t recommend them. I just want to be as upfront as possible.

Quick question so is there anyway of knowing if a tire has been recapped by inspecting it? Or is the only way of knowing is if the owner discloses it to you?

It would be difficult without it being disclosed. I can see where the tread has been "recapped" it has a little bit of very thin rubber excess along the line where the new rubber was applied to the old. If I did not know they were recaps I doubt I would notice that line.
