    Hello all,

My 5vz has 285k miles and compression is reading around 100 for half the cylinders. she still runs and I still drive her all over the country, she really is a good truck. with that said I think its time for a rework of the engine and tranny.

Ive thought about getting a JDM engine and swapping it, but they seem to be harder to find and in reading there is not much confidence that JDM engines are as "new" as they claim.

with that said. I am looking for suggestions on good quality rebuild kits for the engine and transmission. OR a quality supplier of JDM engines that I can have confidence in.

I plan on keeping this truck for a long time so I'm not trying to do it on the cheap.

I know there's prob another thread with this so point me that way if you will, OR ill take the suggestions.

    Cheers,

Welcome to TacomaWorld... Curious as to why you feel the transmission needs to be rebuilt/refreshed. AT or MT? Any issues from your transfer case?

auto trans: a340f. Really the tranny doesn't have any major issues still shifts smooth enough and I drive it everywhere. it has a small leak from the transfer case. I figured if I was doing a power overhaul and the trans was out, it would be the time to overhaul it.

If it's not giving you any issues, I'd say leave it alone aside from a drain/fill. @gearcruncher might be able to suggest anything he would do if it were out.

As for the transfer case, leaking is definitely something I would address. I'd pull it and replace the seals for sure.

Cheers to an 01 with 285k and still going strong.

If you have low compression start thinking about head gasket and valve job, or refurb heads. Also check your valve clearances if you never have they are probably out on the exhaust valves. if rest of engine is good I’d probably leave it be

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along

You really have no idea just what your going to need till the engine is out and inspected,

You could just decide to bore the block as much as possible and cut the crank without inspecting spending more money then needed.
