Hi, I have a 2012 and I was wondering if there's a connector out there like the SimpleUSB where I could just insert it between the mirror and the existing connector to add a USB A port? I'd like to power a dash cam without having to mess with running wires if I can.

Or would I need to make it myself?

    Right, but I have a 2012, which I understand has a 14 pin connector, and that one's for 2016+.

I’m also looking for a similar device but for my 2011 which has the backup camera in the mirror. I assume it’s also different between our years as well?

I think the 2011 is the same as the 2012. As far as I know.

I suppose the alternative is to find compatible plugs, get a 12V - 5V DC down converter, and make one.

I've actually been in contact with the guy who makes the SimpleUSB, and he said he's working on one for our model years hopefully out this month.

I reached out early November, and he said that it's in line for production at the facility he's using, but with holiday orders the warehouse is backed up and he's hoping to have em out later this month but can't make any promises.

I'm tempering my expectations for sometime in early-mid january.

For anyone who is wondering, the 2016+ dongle may fit in the rear view mirror camera port, but will not power it or work. I bought it, tried it, and returned it.

Waiting on the version for us 2nd gen now!

An update for anyone still following this thread:

spoke to the guy who runs the company. The connectors for the 14-pin version (2012-2015 i believe) was produced, but due to the construction of it, it apparently leaves a bulge in the headliner, and is easier to install by going through the overhead console?

He sent me a free one to test out and give feedback, gonna get it in sometime this weekend. Said the design is being re-done and that he will be having them produced more slim/easier to install.

Thanks for the info, I figured it would be sitting in front of the mirror anyway. Hopefully he'll get those out.

Not sure if he plans to ship out the current batch with the issues he's discovered, but if you reach out to him on facebook or through Amazon he'd probably send you one either free or very cheap. I don't mind a bulge as i already have one, from using the mirror riser and stuffing the OEM plug up there anyways.

Update: I got the initial version he had produced that he wants to revise, installed it and it works great!

He definitely wasn't kidding about the bulge in the headliner, it's certainly present. I didn't go in through the overhead console, just pulled the headliner down from the edge and stuffed it in. Bulge is whatever to me because I have my rearview mirror raised, so it basically covers it up. definitely noticeable from the passenger side though. I'll try and snap some pics tonight to show.

As far as install though, works just as you'd expect, and supplies power only when driving. Easy plug and play. Might be worth reaching out to see if you can get a current unit until the revised ones are out.
