    Hey fellas -

I have a 2010 Tacoma TRD and I'm looking to upgrade the stock stereo to a double DIN (TBD). The local stereo shop recommended a Kenwood DDX 395 but said that the existing rearview backup camera display could not be wired to any stereo because the resolution would be poor.

I found a thread RE stereo recommendations but nothing specific to this claimed loss of clarity. Essentially, the tech said the picture (once blown up) would be very pixelated and indiscernible. I find that hard to believe or that there isn't a workaround.

Any truth to this? Thanks in advance.

I have a pioneer 2300 nex and the backup image is just as clear as the OEM backup screen on the mirror (they display simultaneously when reversing). I can also turn on the image on the pioneer display while driving.

My installer said it was do-able, but didn't act like it was going to be indiscernible or anything like that. I haven't tried it myself yet, so I'm going to sub to this to see if anyone has tried this.

Ah, that's the model I have. Good to know it works OK. Did you wire it yourself? No idea what kind of connectors/adapters or splicing needs to be done.

I had it installed by a local audio guy that has done sound systems in every truck and boat that I've owned since I was 16. I'm 38 now, so he's done a lot! He does really good work. I have no idea how to wire it, I just drop it off and I know it will get done right.

Thanks Kevin - Maybe that's the way to go - Crutchfield has a 2330 and a 2400 / 2440 (maybe these are updated versions - I'm not a stereo guy), but I'm guessing if yours works, these should as well. I'll fire a note over to the CF guys to see what I'd need to make this work.

Thanks to everyone who has chimed in so far.

"could not be wired to any stereo because the resolution would be poor".... Lol

If this is what he said...I'm sure he was trying to say " you'll have poor resolution if you use the factory camera".

Idatalink Maestro + Their T harness, will allow you to retain the camera. I installed a radio in my wifes 15 corolla using the mentioned parts, and the resolution is better than it was on stock radio.

Maybe that's it - so the stock camera would be replaced by the Idatalink Maestro / T-harness...? The tech didn't mention those options at all but did reference a steering control module to retain controls (no mention of the possibility to get the camera working on the double DIN screen). I'll check this out - Cheers.

Mine's a 2010 TRD also, so please post what you find out and I'll do the same setup.

I doubt the stock camera gets replaced. I'm pretty sure that cable allows an aftermarket head unit to work with the existing camera and steering wheel stereo controls.

Will do - I have an email out to Crutchfield, so I'll report back.

Remember not all techs know all things. And some like to upsell product.

Not saying this is your case, but its worth considering.

I've had the same Clarion backup camera since September 2016 and I've had three double-DIN head units since then; a Sony that ended up being a lemon, a Boss BV960N that I replaced the Sony with, and a Pioneer that I have now. All worked fine with the backup camera. I have a feeling your backup camera is to blame and not the ale wood HU...

I forgot to mention that I have a 2010 regular cab 5-lug, which is by default a base model, so mine did not come with a backup camera. This is why I have an aftermarket backup camera mounted above the rear license plate, as opposed to the factory tailgate handle location...

Using the T-Harness(along with the Maestro RR) allows you to retain the factory camera

    Good to know.

Here's what the Crutchfield rep sent me back:

"Unfortunately it's not possible to retain the factory back up camera in your Tacoma. I am recommending, however, one of our top-selling aftermarket backup camera models. Have a look and let us know what you think! Call 1 888 292 2591 with any questions."

They linked me to this camera: https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_074RVCLPBS/Accele-RVCLPMBS.html

Of course, if it works then I'd want to maintain the factory camera.

Give idatalink's tech support a call and ask them. They are top notch, unlike the hit and miss tech support at Alpine.

That’s BS. I use factory camera in my 2011. There was a forum member who was making harnesses and selling them on eBay. Will see if I can find info.

EDIT: doesn’t appear member has active account.

I had my stereo guy route my factory camera to an aftermarket Kenwood double DIN and it works just fine. Maybe an aftermarket camera would be more clear? But the factory one is plenty good.

Yeah, I was wondering if there's a higher-res camera that snaps right in to the oem location. I call BS on Crutchfield's answer.
