Anyone have any tips or tricks for installing the rear view mirror?

Mine fell off, and I've not had the best luck re-installing it. I've cleaned the area completely with a razor blade and isopropyl alcohol. Cleaned the button off completely and roughed it with sand paper.

I've tried 3M adhesive, and the loctite brand. Niether have kept the mirror stuck to the glass..

The first week I had my truck the windshield cracked...... No rock hit it, just cracked. I took it to the dealer and they wouldn't help even though the truck was 4 days old. So I paid to have the windshield replaced by a glass company.

The rear view mirror stayed attached for about a month then fell off and it's been a never ending battle since then. What I am curious about is the fact that there is a Black piece of vinyl type material stuck to the windshield where the rear view mirror mounts to. Could that be the reason the mirror won't stay glued?

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

I'll try to post a picture of the black vinyl material when I leave work.

If I had to guess I'd say you're not letting it cure long enough before re-attaching the mirror.

My rear glass is usually so dirty that I rarely look in mine. When the rear view fell off of my old Nissan, I never reattached it. I drove it like that for years. I hate that thing in the way. It's more clutter than it's worth. I keep thinking about removing it.

Does yours have the compass/temp/auto-dim? I love mine. I can see if it was just a plain one then yea, not really useful especially if you have a camper shell like I do.

I let it cure for no less than 12 hours...

I don't have the compass and auto dim, nor do I have a shell on the back.

Guess I will go by an auto glass place and get them to glue it back.

What about the mirror re=location piece someone on the forum sells? Mounts the mirror up higher, and you aren't gluing it to the glass, I believe...

That attaches to the OEM mounting plate just like a mirror does.

Are you using an actual rear view mirror glue?

Yeah it's for rear view mirrors, those are the two brands I've tried, plus some brand at autozone.

Ah. O.K. I just couldn't remember how it mounted since it's been a while since I've seen the thread for it.

it's odd, since I used that brand one time on my Tacoma with no problem at all.

I would say to purchase a new rear view mirror button from the auto parts store- very cheap in cost. From the factory, the side that is glued is smooth. You said you roughed it up with sandpaper. I always use a wire wheel to remove the old glue residue after I slice it off with a razor blade from the button. Also follow the instructions on the kit exactly!! The glass cannot be too hot or too cold when you glue the button to it. I have used the kit pictured above for several decades without problems glueing hundreds of mirrors. I can say that I have had a few bad kits where there was no liquid glue in the dispenser- all dried up. Hope this helps

Have you always glued it directly to the glass, or have you seen windshields that have a vinyl type sticker that is roughly the same shape as the button only bigger where the button is glued to?

Also, I held the button with a pair of vise grips, sraped all the old glue off with a razor, then used my power sander to remove any leftover glue until the button was shiny, then roughed it up with some grittier paper.

I don't have the fancy mirror, and my topper lives on my truck.

If you're in Texas, maybe it isn't curing because it's too hot inside the truck. Just a thought.

I would do it in a garage and leave it in overnight. I've used the adhesive similar to the one someone posted and never an issue. Take a razor blade and scrape any crap off the windshield and the back side of the metal mount.

Mirror fell off my F250, never put it back. Took the mirror off my 2wd Toyota. Don't need the inside mirror on a truck.

Trucks with outside mirrors don't need the inside mirror. Can't see much with it anyway if you have a canopy.

The tape isn't the problem and it's there so the end user can reattach the mirror mount in the correct spot.
