Running trd 4runner wheels w/ 265/70/17 tires. Everything else in the rear is stock. When accelerating from stop and turning right my rear tires will abruptly skip and not catch unless i am gentle on the throttle. Its really only on really tight turns.

    Is my differential messed up?
    Wheel/tire too big?
Anyone else experience this or what do you guys think?

    Odd.

Did you, or anyone install a lunchbox locker in the rear?

check to see if you have the rear differential lock button pushed. if there is no RR Diff lock button lift the rear of the truck off the ground and see if you can spin a rear tire by hand. If you can and the other tire rotates backwards then you have a weird problem. If you cant then you have some sort of a locked differential.

Unless someone did the grey wire mod, locker shouldn't be able to activate without being in 4L.

But I do see where it's important to ask this question.

Ok ill check. Only acquired the truck last year and as far as I know nothing was swapped on the rear end. It definately feels like its locking and both wheels trying to spin together.

I jacked up the truck and one wheel spins forward and the opposite spins backwards. Now what lol
The truck was in gear btw when i did it not sure if that matters.

Ok. When i bought it the diff fluid was clear like it just been changed so i left it. Maybe previous owner put the wrong fluid in. Gonna change it with 75w90 and see if it clears it up

That is the expected behavior for an open diff.

How'd it smell? gear oil is stinky, even when new

I came here to say or ask, is the right tire just "spinning" when accelerating or is it "jumping" causing a bounce?

if spinning, then quit gunning the dam pedal when turning sharp :notsure:

You have a Torsen diff out of a Miata. :D

Or you have typical Tacoma weak springs, fair tire grip and resulting wheel hop when weight load is reduced over that tire. (Hard right loads left)

Changing the diff lube will do nothing for your normal acting rear. Save your time/money.

With my 2.7 I can spin rear tires from the dead stop while on the sharp turn every time. That's normal. With front wheels turned sideways you put big load on the rear wheels which try to push truck forward.

If by "Everything else in the rear is stock" you mean everything is original, then your 21 year old rear shocks are almost certainly completely shot.

Worn out shocks don't hold the tires to the road very well
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sgOf3js2FY&t=8s

But I'm willing to bet you're also just gassing it too much. Pickup trucks have effectively ZERO weight over the drive tires. Which means zero traction.

That's not going to tell you jack shit. A lot of non-selectable AKA lunchbox lockers will behave as an open differential when they're coasting and there's no power being applied. Do a couple hard launches in loose dirt and see if both tires are spinning out. Maybe have a friend watch. But it sure sounds like you have a lunchbox locker.
