    Just a bit more info.

The bed is bent and will need to be replaced.

Bed also hit cabin and created some damage there.

Tow hitch receiver bent and is facing spare tire. Can’t tell if it also pulled the frame down when it bent, but it looks like it did.

When insurance companies total out a car it means that the repair costs exceed the total value of the vehicle at whatever percentage the insurance company sets. For example, if the Tacoma costs $45k and say the repairs cost 15k the percentage is 33.33 percent. If the Insurance company sets their percentage at 40% or 50% of the vehicles value they would likely fix the truck and not total it out. I assume some insurance companies have some exceptions to this rule.

You'll need to talk to your insurance claims department and see what they say. They'll probably replace the frame and rebuild it. Doesn't mean you have to keep the vehicle once it's fixed, but I would consider looking into "diminished value" assuming the other driver was completely at fault.

This isn't the first Tacoma I've seen on this forum pretzel up from the bed and frame like that. If you do a search there's another white Tacoma or two that have or were getting a new frame and having their truck rebuilt after a similar accident.

Based on what I see, it's not close to being totaled.

Another thought, talk to your insurance company about a rental vehicle availability and repair parts availability given the global slow down. That may play into their decision on what to do.

Take the $25K repair pay-out and don’t bother fixing it. Put a tailgate net on it, and buy a dent puller for the rest. Then sell it for $35K and you are up $10K. Too easy.

    It was a drunk driver.

Hit me at 7am this morning, coming home from the bar I imagine.

I’ll look into the diminished value point you suggested.

    Thanks for the information.

    Hope your ok.

Like said, depends on where frame is damaged. If just rail ends they will fix. If buckled near suspension mount they will replace frame.

Insurance companies total cars 2 ways. Some states has a preset threshold set by DOI where once cost of repair exceed the ACV the insurance company has to total it. An insurance company can also total it based on lowest ultimate cost. They can look at cost of repairs, poss DOV (diminished value if own and not leased) and rental and compare that to the vehicles ACV less whatever they will get for it as salvage. I bet salvage on that is probably in the high teens, maybe low 20’s since it is driveable.

Have to wait until adjuster writes est. if you are injured definitely get checked, looks like a decent impact. Plus DUI, insurance company will want to throw money at you right away to secure a release. If you are injured you don’t want to sign anything. Sometimes injuries may take a day to show.

If it helps- I got rear ended earlier this year (appears less damage than yours but it totaled the other car). I went through the other cars insurance (liberty mutual) and they were surprisingly wonderful. Main things I remember were 1) I used the repair shop my dealer uses to get oem or close to oem replacements 2) I was forever paranoid after that the tailgate didn’t quite line up and realized most aren’t aligned from factory even 3) push for diminished value i actually got a second claim awarded on it. …I was pretty stressed at first but once the repair shop jumped in they really did get it back to new and once I got over the feeling of a brand new truck being “not perfect” it actually sort of liberated me to use it like a truck…hang in there though it’s the worst and I still cringe every time I see a car coming up behind me— but as others have said these Tacoma’s seem to handle the damage better than you’d expect.

Depending on state in California things get totalled at 60-65%. No way that’s totalled

    A bunch..and no build thread!
I have a 2018 Cruze with 45K on the clock. We had some flooding here about a month ago and my car sucked up some water, into the intercooler and the engine exploded. The car was $24K when I bought it in November of 2017. So, almost 4 years later, insurance is paying to replace the engine, a $14,000 option on their part because the car is worth, according to them, $23K.

    That's insane.

The point is, used car values are through the roof, so I am sure that will have something to do with whatever decision your insurance company makes. I wish mine would have totaled my car, because now I have to sell it once it comes back.

    Honestly,

If it can be repaired with no issues, I’m ok with that.

Truck is paid off, not really looking to buy a new vehicle in the current market.

My concern is that I pull a 1800lb tear drop trailer for camping quite a bit. Makes me a little nervous to trust the repairs given the damage to the hitch and frame.

I guess I can always wait for repairs, try to get diminished value claim, and trade in after it’s been fixed, assuming the diminished value and trade in add up to what the truck is reasonably worth.

Its 17 Off-road 4x4 with about 40k on the clock.

They seem to be going for about 36-38k here.

To your point- id make sure they do full replacements on all the towing related hardware- and also check drivetrain alignment; I crawled underneath and took pictures of every inch so I could confirm replacement; - post repair I checked they replaced everything connected to frame and that they had Toyota brand ; I also reverified alignment; I’ve been towing heavy loads without issue since on that topic I added a set of Firestone airbag ride rites and it makes towing so much better ). Best of luck!
