    I have this:

    http://sparebumper.com/

The basic step bar without the hitch ball. Has a rubber shock buffer. Lots of traffic here in most areas and I've been at least bumped in every vehicle I've owned. Considering how crappy stock bumpers have evolved I thought it was a good investment.

It rattles a lot. But there is always a solution.

Thanks for the reply! I looked this one up, it's the best I have seen next to my Tyger armor as far as actual usability, Body Armor 4x4 Backbone Off-Road4-in-1 functionality. “These versatile trail tools tackle a multitude of jobs--sturdy skid plates, non-skid steps, recovery points for a variety of tow straps, and reliable wheel chocks.” The anti-rattle part you used is just like the one that comes with my Tyger. I could always use it along with the key lock bolt that came with the Tyger or not, really happy with mine, though change is fun.

You can hear it rattle a bit back there on rough roads. You could always wrap some tape around it to get it to snug up. It's protected my rear bumper, so I'm happy with it.

These hitch steps/bumpers seem like a good idea. I have had some slow speed impacts from behind during the winter, this might save my bumper.

Anyone else know of any other similar/better products to the beaver tail?

I looked at a LOT, Amazon is actually good for checking some out, though I recommend buying direct for the best price or from Summit Racing Equipment. After pouring over reviews these two stand out TYGER Hitch Armor & the Body Armor 4x4 Backbone Off-Road.

This looked good as well if you are already running a hitch/ball and is more discreet.

If nothing was damaged don't sweat it and don't report it to any insurance. If you do it'll show in your carfax report and you'll have diminished value if you trade or sell it later.

I wouldn’t bother and wouldn’t worry at all. That Nissan would have a hell of a lot more damage before you had any frame damage.

This happened to me a few years ago while visiting my hometown - I was driving my JKU and some kid in an F-150 rear-ended me. When he slammed on his brakes the nose of his truck dipped, so he struck my vehicle just under the spare tire and directly on my tow hitch.
The only damage I suffered was a very minor scuff on the bumper and a demolished UK Wildcat hitch cover. The entire front end of the kid's truck was effed-up. Those Wranglers are built like tanks. True story.
Anyhow, the kid and his girlfriend were scared to death. I got his information, we both took lots of pics, and I told him I didn't think there was any damage, but I wanted to get it inspected to insure no damage to the frame or anything important bent, even slightly. I never notified my insurance co, though we did get a police report for documentation purposes.
Took it to my local Jeep dealer, everything was fine, and I called the kid and told him "just give me $25 for a new tow hitch cover and we'll call it even". Still never called the insurance company.
Two years later I traded it in for a Grand Cherokee and that accident was on the CarFax. When the salesman was eyeballing my trade-in I gave him a very honest and descriptive account of exactly what happened and showed him the inspection paperwork. He could not have been less interested.
So, the moral of my story - the piece of mind (and the accompanying paperwork) was worth the free inspection for damage, it DID get reported to CarFax. but in the end it mattered not a whit. So good luck.

OP, I say like most everyone here you are 100% or, rather the Tacoma is 100% OK. So long as the other person does not report it, and there was no police report it will not show up.

You don't buy a lotto ticket AFTER you've already used your luck. Rookie mistake.
