open them up? check pad depth, check for improper wear. rust and make sure they function? i mean if all that didn't happen when i was a tech id be telling you to okay me to re do the rear brakes.

They seem completely rusted over, do drums have pads? I'm not sure I am still trying to learn everything I can.

If the shoe material is 1mm or less, it needs shoes.
I never seen an inspection station measure the drum diameter.
So I would not worry about that.

Drums have shoes, but they work like a pad.
Drum brakes can suck if you haven’t done them before.

well... usually drums are called brake shoes, but they are brake pads. rust, can be deceiving, open up the brake expose the inside blast that thing with a whole heap of water, then blast it all clean with some brake cleaner. let dry and inspect. id bet if they are original at 140k that thing is super full of brake pad dust that may look like rust.

I’m going to warn you early.
Buy the OEM spring kit if you do the shoes.
Aftermarket springs don’t fit exactly right.
    I just went through this.

As for the shoes, they can be aftermarket.
But spend a little extra on the springs and get OE.

There's a round inspection plug on the backing plate you can remove to check shoe friction material thickness. That would be the quickest way to check if the brake meets minimum inspection standard in most states.

Do you happen to have a link for an OEM spring kit?

What problem did you encounter with aftermarket spring kits? I've used several sets of them in the past 8 years.

With shoes I've had good luck with Bosch - the compound doesn't get stuck to the drum when wet.

The spring sets right on the adjuster lock.
The bend on the OE spring is further back.

I don’t, I just took it all back apart and used the OE springs.
I will see if I can find the OE kit when I get home later.

I am just starting off with all of this. Don't laugh at me haha. What are the tools do I need to get the wheels off?

you need a floor jack to suport the back while you get a jackstand under the truck then a 22mm socket if i remember correctly for removing the lug nuts and the tire. then pop the brake drum off

Just a rachet set for the wheel itself then?

    It’s a 21mm.

A drum shoe spring tool and brake spoon will make life so much easier.

You’ll probably need a big hammer too, if the drums haven’t been off in awhile.
