Why? The brakes are good the way they are.

Pickup beds are too light to need disc brakes. Even with the bed loaded they only have 30% stopping power

    They do help. Tremendously.

You don't have to. It is however recommended. As the cylinder we have is for drums. I take it you are thinking about the kit from www.tundraracing.com ?

I have done the rear disk swap on two trucks. One still has the OEM master, and the other upgraded to the Sequoia (?) one.

For you yes, a guy that races his taco... yes. But for 99% of the people who drive em around unloaded, nope. And if you are smart even towing a mid sized trailer, it has brakes as well.

    It's all about the need.

OP, there is a thread, or two(my buzz is making it hard to remember), of people whom all discuss having done the upgrade. If you are so inclined, check it out.

You'll get a lot better brakes by leaving the drum brakes on and swapping the MC and booster to Tundra/Sequoia.

I don't i know if it's required. All the kits I've seen all want you to switch to a Sequoia MC. One thing to note is that the parking break on the disc breaks won't be as strong as the drum.

Would you also need to swap the proportioning valve? I can't imagine the OEM one, which is valved for rear drums, would work properly.

The Tacoma proportioning valve is inside the ABS system.

With Tacoma ABS monitoring wheel speeds if a wheel locks up it automatically applies the ABS system which is actually an advantage when it comes to brake component swaps IMO.

I installed a Tundra MC and dual diaphragm booster (Tacomas have single diaphragm boosters). There is a lot of information on the web about the advantages of a dual diaphragm booster. The Tacoma is disc/drum, the Tundra is disc/disc. I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever, including proportioning of the front and rear brakes. The ABS works exactly as before. The brakes on my truck are amazing with a lot less pedal pressure required and it stops quicker. I also swapped the front brakes for larger stock 4Runner brakes. The rear drums are stock and the shoes are the originals.

I can't even imagine the brakes if I had rear disc brakes. My trucks brakes are amazing. Rear disc brakes are cool in the bragging rights department, IMO. I tow heavy boats sometimes and I've never needed better brakes and most of the heavy boats I've towed their trailer's brakes didn't work at all.

Have to disagree there. My dd taco brakes way better and more consistently with rear disks and an upgraded master.

    Yes
Not true, rear disc conversion adds quite a bit more braking power to the rear end.
