Rear diff fluid change - do u need to add a friction modifier ?

A little confused...With a limited slip rear end do u need to add a friction modifier at time of fluid change? Dealer said as long as the fluid is GL-5 rated -you DON't need to.....

any thought/help here appreciated....

 

It depends what year you have. '09 and up TRD Sports have an electronic LSD and do not require the additive. Earlier TRD Sport models have a mechanical LSD and need the additive for smooth operation.

Another question, how important is it to use a torque wrench? Could I get by without one?

 

you can....just don't over tighten,
same force you use in a oil pan drain bolt will work just fine

 

I have a 2012.non trd base model....so- No modifier needed? just thinking of changing out all the current fluid to THIS :http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/gear-lube/severe-gear-75w-90/?code=SVGQT-EA

 

nothing from 09 up needs a friction modifier.

 

If your rear axle does not have the small white label that reads "LSD" next to the full plug, you DO NOT NEED ADDITIVE. All of these questions are answered in the thread I linked.
