Hey all, I was recently trying to change my rear diff fluid and in doing so, i accidentally rounded off my fill plug ( should've been using a 6 point socket instead of a 12 point...) so my question is what are the dimensions of the bolt like the thread size and length. Thank you in advance.

The dealer stocks those. Are you 4wd or 2wd? If 4wd, you can pull the fill for the transfer case and measure that one, should be the same thread.

Front diff uses that stupid hex bolt, so unless the threads are the same the head of the bolt is definitely different.

That's why I suggested the Transfer case. Doesn't matter though cuz he's 2wd.

You just gotta snug it. Won't leak, much if at all as long as its just slightly beyond finger tight.

can i use the vent bolt at the top of the differential to fill it? I can just measure how much fluid was in it by how much i get out, right?

Yes, you can take the breather out and fill. I used to do that on my old truck, which had spring shims and longer than stock shackles that made the pinion rotate up towards the transfer case. When you rotate the diff significantly the pinion bearing can end up quite a bit lower than the fill plug, which can starve it of gear lube. So I would fill to the plug and squirt in an extra 1/2 quart through the breather.

I bought spares from the dealer for all of my fluid plugs. None of them cost $25. I don't think I paid $25 for all of them combined IIRC. Well, I bought one spare for each fluid reservoir.

I DESTROYED my front diff fill plug on my first attempt to change the fluid, so don't feel bad. This shit happens.
