Hey guys. So my rear bumper is a rusty mess and I’m looking to swap it out. I seen this one on Amazon and I was just about to order it but I’m receiving really conflicting messages. Does anyone know if this bolts up to a Tacoma without the oem hitch ? I see some people say it does and others say it won’t. Really don’t wanna blow 600$ and it not work.

I am not familiar with how the bumper attaches without the hitch but I can hopefully throw some useful info at you.

With tow package Tacoma’s, the bumper is mounted to the hitch which is then mounted to the frame:

Red and green are one piece, I only did 2 colors for clarity. Blue indicates the mounting holes.

I'm not sure if this helps you but my truck came without the OEM hitch and I bought one and put it on there. Didn't have to mess with the bumper at all in the process, just lined it up with the holes and bolted it on.
So it seems to me that the bumper and hitch are independent of each other, but could be wrong.

Edit: I have the 3500lb class III hitch, the class IV might be different.

so it looks like it will be mounted using 4 bolts instead of 6. Which probably isn’t an issue considering how my oem bumper must be only using 4 bolts without the hitch

What? With the stock hitch it mounts identically to the stock bumper. 6 bolts.

    4 run, 2 don't
No experience with a 2nd gen, but I'd advise one to steer clear from Amazon bumpers when there are so many aftermarket companies that support all Tacoma generations.

I'm sure some of you remember this last one - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/aftermarket-vijay-front-bumper-trouble.659642/

Looks like it mounts to the hitch that is mounted to the frame.... Only 2 bolts on each side to connect it to the hitch?

My buddy was saying he bought some Jeep stuff off of Hooke road before. He hasn’t had any complaints. I’m just more so concerned about fitment. I put in the order just then, but if I hear something bad I’ll just cancel it

2 bolts per side as well as the 2 in the middle that hold it to the hitch. Because yes, I would agree with you that in the case of a hitchless mount (if compatible) would only allow for 2 per side which I would be more worried. Are you thinking about force being applied if you slam it on rocks or pulling on the bumper in the event of a recovery or?

By that logic the hitch is a damage multiplier, and because of physics, crumple zones, and all the other Toyota safety features. It works as intended to redirect force to protect the vehicles occupants.

Yes, this bumpers weld quality is sub par. For durability I would put it somewhere right in the middle between a stock bumper and a quality bumper. It only weighs a little more than stock so it makes a great replacement, especially if you just want to get rid of an old rusty bumper.
