Rear brake self adjuster kit

So I recently found out my 6 lug Tacoma doesn’t have the rear brake self adjusters. So I’m trying to find a kit or someone who has the spare part. Or any suggestions. I’ve gone to part stores and they don’t have them. I bought a set on eBay hoping it’s the part but if it’s not, u may have to do junkyard parts. Any leads to find the parts help.

 

How can you not have the self adjusters .

So your rear brakes no longer work unable to be adjusted.

You must have very long pedal travel as all the fluid expands the wheel cylinders.

I have never had problems finding them. I have a bunch of new ones.

Did the counter people say they did not carry them or they were not in stock??

Would be the next day or a few days to get them in ?

Looking I found a few different kits quite easy.

 

i did have low pedal and went through two sets of rotors due to over heating. I just have been doing rear adjustments to get by. I’ll get some pictures soon when I do the job. And if you got some new ones, how could I get in contact with you?

 

You can buy the adjusters at any parts store.
You’ll be fine there. But the spring kit, stick to OEM springs.
Remember to lube the adjusters.

 

All the internals except for the spring kit I ordered and had it 'ship-to-store' from Napa online.
That way I could match to the old one, and get instant refund if not right.

Napa sells most any toyota part, including a lot of their oem.

Sometimes part people get 5lug stuff and 6lug mixed up.
Its very difficult to find a part that someone doesn't make...

The spring kit.....every other Advance store keeps those in stock.
Same kit must be used in a lot of different asian vehicles.


And on mine I wouldnt run anything but akebonos pads up front, and oem shoes on rear.....they seem to last forever...

You're talking brakes. Safety item. No shortcuts or back of the truck deals.

 

Toyota drums do not self adjust, they will click if wildly out of adjustment but even a 2023 tacoma requires adjustments with tire rotations.

 

That's why you're supposed to be setting/using your parking brake.

 

I've worked on Toyotas since 2005, they all require adjustments, even manual drivers that use the parking brake. The auto adjuster will click if its way out. But never to a point anywhere close to proper.

 

As these get older and get messed with, that tang on the brake lever gets jacked.

It can be so far off that it misses that star all together.

Or whats more common is it jambs against that star ....locking everything up solid.
Preventing further adjustment. Until you pop a screwdriver in there and pop it loose again.

Not sure if its the tang gets bent, or too much play develops in that lever.

After messing with it for 6mo.....I just went for all new from Napa.

From what I can tell, for all those selling toyota parts.....business is good....

 

I have never any had problems.

Then I start with all new parts .

The trick is getting the shoes adjusted up correct the first time after the brake drums are removed for any reason .
I have several Toyota 4x4 never a problem with the shoes staying adjusted.

Not saying a word about the Bell cranks seizing in the brackets if they sit for months in the climate here.

 

My standards of adjusted obviously higher as I am paid to inspect and adjust the shoes. But only if they were recently adjusted by a competent tech do they require only a few clicks. Most that I see (manuals included) require 10-12 clicks to get even a hair of drag. Sometimes way more. Parking brake lever on manuals all the way out. Auto adjusters never seize, the pivot on the cable seizes.

My point mostly is people need to adjust their shoes from time to time, not rely on on an auto adjuster. ESPECIALLY on a 1st gen that has tiny brakes to start with.

 

Yes indeed That is completely different case , any problems would come right back at you .

In this age.

 

The cable for the E-Brake was wrapped around around the little teeth the above it. Would that have affected the pedal feel and as well the fact that it kept getting loose?

That all looks normal.

 

On the top picture the cable is stuck under the bottom pin that the shoes ride against.

Did you fix that problem?

That would cause your problem!!
