The same shit everyone else has.
Im gettin ready to pull the trigger on a set of new rear shocks for my truck and I have a few questions.

    Background info -

    - 2011 TRD Off Road
    - Front suspension - 5100s set at 1.75" w/ stock coils (soon to be replaced with Eibachs)
    - Rear suspension - Non TSB springs w/ Wheeler's 3 leaf HD 1.5" add a leaf on stock Bilstein shocks.
    - 265/70/17 Duratracs.

I use the truck as a daily driver during the week and on weekends it sees alot of mild off road use - hunting and fishing trips, logging roads, fire road, forest road, nothing too extreme.

Im very happy with the Bilsteins on the front both on and off road. They fit the budget and perform perfect for what I need. The rear shocks have 62k miles on the and I want to upgrade the rear shocks to match.

    However I have some questions...

After doing some research, I'm more confused then when I was before I started.

First off, I cannot find the specs on the stock TRD shocks - collapsed and extended.

Secondly, some websites list the 5100s working with 0-2" of lift, 0-1.5" of lift, 0-1" of lift, and some list them being the same length as stock shocks.

    Whats the deal?

Can I run the 5100s without damaging them with a 1.5" lift?

Ive also seen somewhere where people are running Tundra 5100s because they are a bit longer,

    - Tacoma 5100s are 14.02" collapsed/22.94" extended/8.92" of travel
    - 2nd gen Tundra 5100s are 15.33" collapsed/24.8" extended/9.4" of travel

If the Tacoma 5100s are the same length as stock, it seems like the Tundra ones are the perfect length for the 1.5" of lift? They have the roughly a 1/2" more travel but are 1.5" longer than the Tacoma ones.

    Thanks

You will be ok but you might look at something like an OME N182 as they offer 1.2 in more travel than the 5100 and its all more droop which will allow your suspension to flex more.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check them out.

Gotcha. I understand they add no lift. Im worried about them having the proper travel for the 1.5" of lift. Ive been reading where people are having problems with them botttoming out.

Does anyone have the specs on the stock Bilsteins?

The main reason why i didnt go with the 5100's in the rear is that they offered no more travel compared to the stock TRD shocks. As far as other 5100 options there is the B110 option (i think its from the tundra) BUT you must be running a THICK leaf pack or blocks or extend your bump stops as if you just rock an AAL on the stock leaf pack you will bottom the shock before the bumpstop hits.... which is BAD.

I have 5100's recommended by wheelers off-road for my wheelers hd springs which netted 2" of lift. So far they seem ok, but I have had the shock boot pull off the shock when I've flexed it a couple of times.

Hey OP, I think they are also valved to be (to a degree) weight specific?

Here are the suggest shocks for the Tacoma.

    05+ Tacoma Rear Shocks
    5100 0-1.5" - 24-186728
    5125 2-2.75" - 24-214667
    5160 0-1.5" - 25-177343

Bilstein says 0-1" on the shocks, but we know they can do 1.5" blocks no problem.

So the first model number will fit with a Toytec 1.5 inch AAL with no problem?

You would be better off with the longer shocks. You are maxing them out with that AAL.

The 1.5 AAL will be added to my current 4 leaf. So the second ones will do it thanks. Any deals on the second ones currently?

I just upgraded my 09 DC to General Spring's 3+1 HD springs and a set of 5100s. 1.75" in the front and a 2° wedge between the spring and axle in the back and I ended with 2¾" of lift. If you have any chance of going any stronger in your back suspension you should buy the longer travel Bilsteins now, they won't hurt anything if you never do more yet will cost next to nothing to do now.

My rear Bilsteins came with the wrong rubber bushing in the eye end of the shock. I ground off the excess rubber, ground off a 1/16th" on the included steel bushing, then pressed the steel into the rubber using my vise. I double checked that the shock had the right valving, just the wrong bushing. The Bilstein torque for the top of the shock shaft really didn't seem right to me so I just tightened the nut until I had a 1/4" of stick out.

I'm quite happy with the results although I wished I'd seem some warnings about driveline judder on the how to posts before I did the new leaf springs.

Thanks for clearing that up Chas.

My add a leaf netted about 1.75" of lift. Sounds like I need the longer ones eh?

Can anyone clear up the info about the Tundra 5100 shocks since are roughly 3/4" short than the 5125s. They seem to fall in between where the Tacoma 5100s sit and the Tacoma 5125s sit.

    Thanks

Thanks. I was able to find all that info. Only thing I couldnt find was a comparison of the valving between the Tundra and Tacoma 5100s. Im worried the Tundra ones, along with the universal 5125s, will be too stiff since the Tundra is a larger/heavier vehicle. I want the rear to be stiff, but not bouncy.
