Yea I’m pretty pleased I gotta watch him on the small stuff but he does ok!
He doesn’t do much work himself but his guy Brian is a awesome mechanic.
But no one is perfect I found my grommets for the parking brakes not fully seated. They were prolly fine but I’m anal and check as much as I can I think.

Here's that video I mentioned. It's an hour long, but it's worth watching. He's working on a 4 runner, so the part numbers may be wrong, but the procedure should be the same.

Good places to have. There is a shop down here that did my spring. Low tech, old school shop. Felt like stepping back in time. Was very cool.

Kinda funny but his guy has actually given me crap about not doing some things I’d had him do on the wife’s car.

Were you able to get it fixed? And for how much? Prices keep jumping here. I get an appointment scheduled then they call me back saying it's going to be $300 more then they originally quoted.

    Fixed today.
I went in telling them that the seal was gone and I thought the bearing was toast too.
They called back saying it was the axle seal in the rear for sure but the bearing in the rear was fine.
The front bearing was toast. o_O

So for just the rear it would have been:
    $200 labor
    $17.02 parts (seal)
    ----------
$217.02+tax to do the rear seal only.

That's great! Just scheduled my appointment. $287 all said and done. Was hoping for less but this was the lowest price by a long shot.

For those who want to replace the seal themselves. Here is a link on a member who posted the procedures.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/rear-axle-seal-replacement.288348/

I did mine a while back it wasn't too hard. The only thing was having the seal puller which helped. If you don't have the seal puller then it's a B**** to get out. Installing it back in was an ease. Just use a 2x4 and hammer and slowly tap the seal in evenly. Then use the old seal to fully tap it in. The seal itself only cost about $8-$12.

If you're doing the axle bearing you'll need a press. I did both side seal and axle bearing total cost for me was like $600+. I did my own labor beside for the hub bearing pressed into the axle.

That's a steal considering they have to disassemble the brake, reassemble and then bleed the system in addition to the obvious

Yeah, I thought it was not worth the aggravation and to have someone else with everything on hand do it.

But you never really know if you need a bearing until you get in there right? That was my thing, I really did not want to deal with the bearing being bad (which I was sure it was). This one repair was out of my league.

Yea, mine was bad on one side so I just did the replacement for both side. It does take sometime. The hardest part was disassembling the drum component and lines. The install was pretty much reverse and easy once you take the drums apart.

The price you got it for was actually really cheap. I would have just done the bearing with the seal since it was already off. The cheaper route would be to just buy a complete rear axle and replace if your bearing goes out. That'll be next for me if mine goes out again.

I was thinking the same pending what kind of price my shop gave me to do the bearings.
As far as the seal I mentioned doing both the shops mechanic talked me into waiting said you may need bearings before the next seal.
Makes sense and doing the seal was cheap enough but he was already doing the parking brake cables at the time.

I’m sure everyone does this but check your diff vent if stuck it will blow out the seals.
I usually check it whenever I’m under it.
