So I took my truck into les schwab thinking I was leaking brake fluid out of my rear passenger brake drum. Come to find out it's my rear axle seal. They don't have the press machine to do it properly. So I made some phone calls. Local shop quoted me around $250, stealership quoted $350 and another local shop quoted $1047.40?!?!?! So my question is what is a reasonable quote for this? Seems like a simple job if you have the right tools just don't want to get screwed.

Had one side done about a year ago. I was informed while having parking brake cables replaced for inspection. I was going to do them myself but didn’t feel like being on my back on the floor for that long plus I know I have my frame well buried in undercoating.
    Anywho,
Total was 500$ and 265$ were parts oem cables were 250$ seal and o ring was 15$.
And he charged me 15$ in shop supplies due to using a can of brake cleaner on the pads.
Not sure if this helps or not?

Didn't replace the shoes? Just cleaned them? Did that work out okay?
Think I am going to need a bearing too. :(

Pressing the collar on in the right spot to make sure the seal runs on the collar, takes someone that knows what they're doing and has the big long Toyota specific press tool thingy. Search for Timmee(sp) the tool man video on how to replace rear axle bearing.

That sucks prolly be a little more.
Yea we just cleaned them really well with brake cleaner and no issues at all!
Did the same with my fronts after popping a piston. I had replaced the rears like 3 months prior and had kinda forgot about it thought I’d squeak by inspection.

    Passenger for me as well!

Prob in the same bit for me. But pretty sure I knocked the seal when I swapped 3rds. They are sensitive that’s for sure.

You have to pull the axles it to swap the 3rd member in the rear when changing gears. So you have to be super careful. I did the walk though where I left brakes in tact instead of pulling all the way out and looks like they rested it knocked a seal. They are sensitive

So I’m in line for a frame here and I’m at 170k 125k done by myself!
And am thinking I should do wheeel bearings but everything is still tight and no noise?
Doing the rear bearings not on my agenda at home!

Cool thanks for that I was curious.
I’m a DD with only deer season and winters for 4 wd.
Kinda like buying a divers rated watch in case you drop it in the sink doing dishes!
