So true. Last year I spent $1450 on fuel. In return I have total freedom to travel any where at my convenience, that's a damn good deal if you ask me. It was a good deal 8 years ago when I was driving twice the distance, fuel was $0.20/L more and I wasn't making half what I do today.

To answer the question my '06 AC 4.0L 4x4 SR5 averaged 17-18mpg with 265/75R16 BF Goodrich KO tires.

All tires are 265 75 16. Grabber AT2 got 17ish, Blizzak 18.7, General HTS go little over 20. HTS’s are borderline dangerous with even a dusting of snow.

My 2007 DC 4X4 will get 19+ on the hwy. 20 isn't unusual and under ideal conditions I've done 23 once. For my normal every day driving 15-16. My truck is basically stock. I do have E rated LT265/75/17 all terrain tires on it which are a little larger than factory. But fuel mileage is exactly the same now as it was 13 years and 200,000 miles ago.

I get 14 city, 17 highway. Funny thing, a customer of mine was the mechanical engineer in charge of designing the 4.0. I asked him about the terrible fuel economy and his response was basically "well at least it's reliable" ymmv

Stock: My average is 17.3, been as low as 12 and as high as 23. My brother has a loaded 2019 Silverado quad cab V8 and his MPG is always better than my Tacoma. He's managed to get nearly 25 MPG on a couple trips. But I keep reading and hearing that GM isn't as reliable. Could there be a correlation between trying to run engines to lean to meet EPA requirements and reliability?

Normal driving with no trailer I get 15-16 mpg in town and 17-18 mpg on the highway. Most of my driving is at about 4,500 ft elevation. 265/75/16 c rated tires, a small lift, armor, and a shell.

I've owned two 2GEN 4WD V6 autos. All stock with the exception of my current 2013 that has a Leer 180 shell & Thule Racks on the cab & shell at 105k.
I'm in Northeastern Vermont fwiw so a mix of mountains, secondary roads, minimal interstate.
My mpg varies 16-21. If I really put my foot in it (rev above 2k) gas mileage suffers.
My best mileage was with my Winters 245/75/16 tires and keeping it under 2k.
I use no special fuel additives. Oil is changed at 5k and is not synthetic.
So my operative SOP to maximize my driving value is keep revs under 2k and follow manual for service maintenance.
Towing anything large and the truck eats gas like no get out. That's my unscientific assessment of owning and driving a 2GEN V6 auto for 14 years.

2011 DCSB 4x4, 265/75-16 tires, otherwise stock, 90K miles. Towing 4500 lb I get about 10-14, everyday driving around town about 15-16 and interstate about 17. I've gotten 18 mpg on one tankful, but I was trying hard. Did everything but cut it off going downhill.

There's tons of threads on this if you want to search for them. Or, go to fuelly.com and it will be accurate. I keep track of mine on fuelly. My stock truck averages 18.5 mpg over 85,853 miles.

I traded a 2002 F150 Supercrew 4X4 with the 4.6 engine for my 2007 Tacoma. That was 13 years ago, but comparing the Ford to my new at the time Tacoma I gave up about 10 HP, and about 300 lbs towing ability. But I got a much smaller, easier to maneuver truck that got about 3mpg better fuel mileage. And while on paper the Ford had more power and theoretically could tow more, the 1500 lb lighter Tacoma certainly had more power.

I took the Ford from GA to CO twice on road trips and was totally frustrated by the lack of power and performance at altitude. After the 2nd trip I made the trade to Toyota. My Tacoma has made the same road trip 4 times and it has never once struggled with either the inclines or altitude. Considering that the Tacoma comes so close to 1/2 ton performance I don't think the fuel mileage is so bad. The older Toyota trucks got a lot better fuel mileage, but were really limited when it came to towing. We can't have it both ways. Either great fuel mileage, or respectable towing/hauling capability.

Granted trucks have changed in the last 13 years. I reached the point 4 years ago where my old Tacoma was just too small and I bought a 2014 F150 very similar to the old 2002 I had, we kept the Tacoma. The new 5.0 in the Ford comes within 1 mpg of my Tacoma and has significantly more power than the 2002. But the tow ratings just aren't that much more. About 1200 lbs.

The new 3rd gen Tacomas have improved fuel mileage too, while still maintaining tow ratings within 100 lbs of the older 2nd gens.
