    Folks -

    New to the Forum.

I have recently purchased a used 2009 Tacoma which has a factory backup cam in the tailgate. However, it has no display; the display (presumably a rearview mirror with integral display) was apparently an option that the original owner did not go for.

I'd like to add a display, but want to keep it under $100 if I can. So, some preliminary questions:

    1. How do I test the existing camera, to see if it still works?
    2. Where is the end of the cable that connects to the rearview mirror display (under headliner?)?
    3. It would seem that a replacement rearview with display would be the easiest way to add a monitor, but OEM replacements are pretty pricey. I am trying to add a monitor for less than $100, if I can. Generic mirrors with displays can be had for less, any recommendations?
    4. If a mirror display is a no-go, can/how do I connect a standalone (e.g. top of dashboard) display?
    Thanks for replies.

You are asking for a lot of information. Start research by searching for this thread. It will answer a lot of your questions. "2nd gen Joying Head Unit Thread".

OK, while I'm searching through that lengthy thread, can someone tell me at least where to locate the camera connector to the rearview mirror display. I did see a youtube video once that it's tucked just inside the headliner near the mirror base, but can't seem to relocate that video.

Is it actually a factory camera, or was it an addition from a previous owner? I see lots of stuff in a Google search for aftermarket head units and tailgate camera kits, but not a lot pops up as a factory option.

It is a factory camera, as far as I know. The Youtube video showing how to extract the cable/connector out of the headliner made mention that Toyota sold the base vehicle with the camera, but the rearview mirror with the integrated display was optional.

The best place to contact is going to be Bob's mirrors.

I can't be sure of any price point. But he does have this mirror on clearance
    https://www.bobsmirrors.com/Gentex-...nstallation-Kit-CLEARANCE-SPECIAL_p_1595.html

He set me up with a gentex v4 homelink and compass camera/mirror with pigtail adapter for me to move my camera display from my radio to the mirror for what I still consider a very reasonable cost of $209, with an offer to buy back my trucks stock gentex v5 homelink mirror for $100. I never made the time to package and ship my original mirror off to him.

He wasn't the most prompt with emails(but I'm not either, so it didn't bother me), but is extremely knowledgeable about everything he sells. At the very least, reach out to him and describe your current findings from the YouTube videos you followed, and explain your price goals.
