I’ve been considering getting new gears to help compensate for the mods and the camper I tow. I feel the truck just doesn’t have enough torque when pulling the camper from a stop, and up hill.

    Here’s what I’m working with.
It’s a 5 speed auto, 275/70/17s, USOffroad winch mount with winch, apex sliders, recovery gear in bed. Camper is ~5000lbs including the extra gear.

I had the wheels/tires done at the dealer when I bought the truck brand new so I don’t know what the truck felt like stock to compare.
The taco is not my daily driver. It’s primarily for hunting/camping.

Ive read some posts recommending 4.88 but then I read 20 more posts and got confusedo_O. What are the pros/cons for the different ratios given my needs? Where is a good source for said gears?
I know a supercharger would help but I want to explore other options for now.

I just put 4.56 gears in my v6 automatic with 265-70-17's (31.6 inch) tires about 400 miles ago. No armor or any other weight added on. I really like how it drives now. RPM at 70 mph is 2500. Your taller tires and added weight would respond well to 4.88's, in my opinion..

My opinion would be. 4.56. The factory tire usually is a 245/65/16. Approx.30.5” and your current tire is about 32.2 so basically plus 2. If I remember correctly the factory gear is 3.73 so 4.56’s should get ya back to normal maybe a couple hundred rpm higher at 70mph. So 4.88 my be a bit over-geared when your running down the highway. Good luck.

4.88s because you will want 35s one day.

So with 4.56 would it pull the trailer better?
When you say the 4.88 would be “over-geared” what would the rpm be at 60mph in 5th.

I'm running 285/75/16 tires with 4.56 gears. I bought it with the gears/tires so I don't know what it felt like without them, but it feels just right IRT RPMs and power. I think 4.88s would be too much for my truck.

If you're pulling a 5000lb camper DEFINITELY no lower than 4.88's. You won't be "over-geared"and your trans will thank you in the long run.

Same set up....Removed 3:73 gears and went back with 4:10's. Geared closer to stock/stock tires.
