A few days ago a dump truck kicked up a stone and put a Nick in my windshield. The next morning I went out and there was a crack almost halfway down the windshield, of course on the driver side. My truck will not even be one-year-old until next week, so fairly annoying.
That said, I end up calling it into my insurance to get the windshield replaced. They told me it would cost me $50 for my deductible and I had to take it to a Safelite auto glass place one town over from me. They told me I would have to leave it there for at least three hours because once they replace the windshield they have to re-calibrate the “system “ due to the new windshield. That would all be covered by my insurance.

So I am here scratching my head saying what the devil needs to be re-calibrate it? The only thing in my windshield is the radio antenna. Perhaps sharper mines than my own here, can educate me.

You have the camera on your windshield. That has to be properly calibrated or you will have some dash lights on.

Camera in there that helps operate pre-collison system, lane departure, and auto high beam. If Safelite does it, they will need to recalibrate since they disconnect it during windshield replacement.

I replaced the front windshield in my taco. You slide the cover off and slide the camera off without disconnecting it from the glass. The new glass has the bracket for the same position where the camera goes. Did mine for $275 no recalibration required and done in less than an hour. It was also a pilkington windshield.

I feel your annoyance but mine made it eight months before a semi did the same thing to me. I’m sitting here going ‘why’d he get so lucky’

    Sucks to be us ;)

Question....everyone says they use OEM but I’m a wee bit too jaded to believe that everybody’s OEM is created equal. Anyone got a recommendation on a brand to look for....or avoid?

No more safelite glass for me. I've found a few negatives to be poor installation, easier to chip, and one so distorted out of shape the windshield wipers miss a huge spot. Take it somewhere else like a dealer or other reputable glass shop and ask for OEM. OEM, is there no longer a label on the factory windshield or other glass?

My wife had the same thing happen. Snapped a pic of the license plate and we called the owner and told him. His insurance replaced it with an OEM windshield.

I’ve stopped using Safelite. I used them once a couple of years ago on a work truck, the glass was okay but looked wavy from the sides and it was expensive.

Recently I needed to replace the windshield on my GF’s Highlander. Quote from Safelite was $600ish. I ended-up getting a replacement windshield for about half the cost from a local independent guy. Glass looks as good as OEM.

Safelite replaced mine with OEM glass and its perfect.......until a sand truck passed me in the opposite direction on a two lane highway and a few small pebbles hit the glass and pitted it. The OEM glass is not that good either.

I had my 2017 4Runner glass replaced by safelite with the glass from the firm featured on the Netflix series and...I’m impressed with it. There’s less pitting and a year later...no serious chips.

I think the OE Toyota glass is crap.

So, your 2019 truck is only eight years old? And your insurance deductible is only $50?

I realize the universe and the space-time continuum maybe be out of balance at the moment, but this seems nuts.

Just for reference, my 2013 Tacoma is seven years old, and my insurance deductible when I cracked my back glass was $500. Share your secrets to a forever young truck and unbelievably low insurance deductible please.

You know your deductible is based on what you pay for insurance, right? You can call up your insurance and get a $0 deductible even, it will just cost a few more bucks on your premium.

As to the windshield, I was told the only option for my 2020 is OEM glass currently. (which is what I wanted so I'm good with that). Both the dealer and the glass shop that's doing the work on mine said they'd only use OEM as their experience with non-OEM on Toyotas has been hit or miss on being able to properly recalibrate the truck after replacement. The glass shop told me similar on my Wife's Jeep, recalibrating non-OEM is hit or miss.

Glass damage/replacement is typically under comprehensive where deductibles don't apply. I've been using the same glass company for 40 years with GREAT success and all the insurances companies I've used over the years have been ok with my using them as opposed to dictating who I use.

Might be time for you to look for another insurance company after settling this claim. I'd hate to think what they will put you through if you were to have a major claim.

Correct. One of, if not THE only, adder most insurance agents won't try to sell you on. If you have a clean record and good credit, it's a very small difference to lower your deductable. Of course if you have a much lower deductable, you're more likely to use it,,,, hence why it's often not an upsell. It's been 5 or so years, but when I moved mine from $500 to $250, I want to say the increase was $27 a year.

Usually you have a comprehensive deductible and a collision deductible and they can be two different amounts. Unless you have $0 comprehensive deductible, you still have a deductible for comprehensive.
