peak power is nowhere near 3500. it doesnt hit peak power until 6000rpm and torque almost 5000rpm. which is why this engine is terrible for towing. these engines barely make enough low end power to utilize 6th gear now unloaded without regearing or getting an aftermarket tune. the engine can tow it absolutely. but you have to be revving the hell out of it in most situations.

Sorry, "peak power" was a bad term. I meant that's where it makes its power in general. The truck is geared toward lifestyle and MPG and not made with towing as the primary focus. That being said, the tow ratings, however, were made with this in mind and with the stock tune and gears.

The 3rd gen Tacoma uses the 2gr-fks rated at 276 hp, which is an Atkinson cycle 3.5 V6. This engine is shared with the sienna mini van and some other models.

The 2g-rfe is an Otto cycle 3.5 V6 engine rated at 314 hp and used for a period in the Camry, RAV4, Avalon, several Lexus models and also lotus used it with some custom camshafts and a supercharger in a couple models.

the 2grfe is an absolute gem of an engine and although I’ve never seen one swapped into a Tacoma I have seen them swapped into some cars and they are extremely impressive

it's super quiet too even at high RPMs. my 2TR-FE is reliable but i can't say it's quiet. maybe the cab has less insulation.

I think the same thing every time I visit a towing thread. If I couldn’t feel my trailer I would think I spent too much money on too much truck. Unless it’s a dedicated work/tow truck, most trucks are only towing a fraction of their lives. It’s similar to saying you can’t go off-roading without a SAS and 40s. YMMV.

Totally agree, you give me hope in people.

These trucks are so capable of so many things. They haul people, stuff, tow, and off road so much better than what I grew up with.

I love the versatility of these trucks, and I say that using much of that capability.
