    Hey all,

Looking for some help trying to diagnose a faint rattling sound that occurs intermittently under acceleration. I only started noticing this recently but it’s a metallic sound. Not sure what could be the cause, I grabbed a short video of it. It’s very faint and slightly hard to tell from the video but did the best I could to capture it.

    engine is a 2RZ-FE.

link to video not working. Check heat shields and the backing plates to see if they are bent or loose. Did you do any recent repairs?

Hard to hear but your description makes it sound like it might be engine pinging/preignition. How old are the spark plugs and wires?

May be spark knock. Try premium fuel and see if it goes away.

Look at your heat shield on your catalytic converter. I had a annoying rattle when I accelerated and found the bolt on the back of the heat shield had rusted out and the shield was loose. I was told this is very common. I just wrapped a stainless hose clamp around it and its been quiet since last summer. Garages were wanting $100+ to do the same thing. A Toyota CSR told me to save myself a few bucks and do it at home. Very easy. Grab your exhaust and shake it hard and you should be able to here it rattle.

Just took a look and saw exactly this. Will go ahead and give that a shot and hopefully it will go away, otherwise I would hope it would not be pinging/preignition since the engine itself sounds fine even while accelerating in neutral and spark plugs were just done last year and I've put on maybe 2K miles if I'm lucky.

Initially I thought my torque converter was coming loose because I could hear the sound under my feet when I accelerated. I'm hearing impaired so that doesn't help. I took the truck over to my nephew who is a mechanic and we put it up on the lift he has . He did a quick inspection and then grabbed the exhaust pipes and shook it hard. There was the rattle. The shields were still in place but one of the bolts rusted apart that held them in place. He wrapped a stainless clamp around it and sent me home. Good luck with yours. The CSR at Toyota told me this is a common problem and easy fix.

Yep, this is exactly what was the case here too. Threw a clamp around it and all is now good.

    Thank you for the help!!

Glad you found the issue. Better than my solution of turning up the radio and getting one of these

Haven't checked that yet thanks ! shop I took it to in Spokane (Bob's) ,don't recommend, replaced the carrier bearing (upside down) 2-more trips seems okay? BUT still have the fluttering noise & getting worse ...also let off the gas now & seems to be braking its self slower & that getting worse. Shops gouging me & puzzled getting no where? HELP ..I'm 81 & no lift hard crawling around searching for an answer. Off to check exhaust ? Bob's has a hot deal on A/C compressors $856. without parts or labor !:annoyed::angrygirl:

I’m having concerns regarding my 2022 tacoma that i just purchased yesterday… it came with 67k miles and overall has been a tank. However, just today i started noticing a rattling sound from the front as I accelerate, initially when it’s in the 20-30mph range, and occasionally when I'm accelerating at a higher speed. I heard it could be maybe a wire behind the radio thats tapping, or maybe the dashboard is tapping against the windshield when those initial vibrations kick in when the gears shift as i accelerate. Performance wise the truck is running beautifully as of now. But i always get paranoid over small things like this and im just trying to figure out if anyone had this same issue and if it was just caused by something very stupid and easy to fix. Please someone give me some reassurance and tell me good news Lol.. Also hoping this rattling sound isn’t the start of something mechanical that will kill my truck because i just got it :(
