for OLD FARTS like me that want an old-school look, or for those that like white letter tires…

DO NOT buy the Dupli-color paint pens at Pep Boys. They are often dried out stuff that’s been sitting on the shelf for eons. The Ranger Tire Paint is a brush-on, oil based, hard, yet rubbery paint and it should last a long time. i know this because i accidentally spilled half the can on my dropcloth. after it dried, it's gummy and flexible, yet harder than say latex paint.

it took about 2 hours a tire to CAREFULLY do the outline and then three coats on the inside. i have outline white letter tires, which required some trimming of the extra rubber. raised white letter tires, where the entire letter is raised would have been much easier.

They say it’s best to be done on new tires that have never had any silicone based tire cleaner or tire dressing applied. Half a can easily did all four tires, and I have leftover.

Available in many colors if you want to get aggressive. Once again, not as popular with the younger folks, but if you want to START A TREND try the different colors.

    Cheers,

HERE IS THE SPILLED PAINT ON MY DROPCLOTH. VERY HARD, DURABLE, YET STILL FLEXIBLE.

    20140128_200423_zps8e2222cb_2e10752aaa712716d52b522af0bcf52842dc1218.jpg

HERE IS THE P.I.T.A. PART - YOU NEED TO CAREFULLY TRIM OFF THIS EXCESS RUBBER WITH AN EXACTO-KNIFE

    20140128_200140_zpsa16aacb5_4d104003390f1b915e415df711c09b7870c1fbc0.jpg

... it's also the perfect paint to re-paint the 4x4 (or anything) on mudflaps, especially the more flexible, rubber mudflaps.

lots of great photos on the Ranger Tire Paint website.

i was browsing around their website, and from my understanding, if you buy any color OTHER than white, you need to base coat it first with white?

so say i go for red, i have to buy the red and white?

you are correct, oh great one!

HOWEVER, if you have tire where the WHOLE letter is raised and already white, you won't need the white as a primer.

start your own trend, the RED would be killer if done right. i love the look of the General Grabbers below.

Nice job ! That's the main reason I have my letters turned in. Might have to reconsider my options.

    DO NOT ATTEMPT UNLESS:

    • You have A.D.D.
    • You have plenty of time on your hands
    • You have nothing better to do
    • Your girlfriend is out of town
    • Your internet connection is down
This is considered "custom work" and it takes a long, long time to get it right. takes more time than pin-striping an old-school hot-rod.

You can't half-ass this job, the Ranger Tire Paint is a different white than comes on the tires, and it has to be done thoroughly and carefully.

LOVE IT THOUGH and it should last as long as the tires. touch-ups, if needed a year from now will be a snap.

    Cheers,

I set out to find a white tire paint that actually works in real life. So a purchased a few paints including Ranger Tire Paint and tire pens. So to skip to the truth tire pens look like junk up close, Ranger Tire Paint is a very low quality paint and an absolute waste of time (will flake off in under 1 week guaranteed). To my surprise I did find a paint that actually works and a very quick way to apply with excellent results, if anyone still cares. I’m from Canada and we have a paint here called Tremclad. Make sure you haven’t used any type of “Tire Shine”, wash tires. Then I simply used Tremclad White Paint and rolled it on with a very small 1.5” wide paint roller that I purchased from a Home Hardware store, let it cure for minimum 50hrs then roll on a flexable clear coat to stop the paint from turning yellow/brown let it cure 24hrs. My Nitto Ridge Grapplers look perfect 1.5 Months so far.
