I just turn the vehicle off and on again. The head unit usually comes back on then.

Most likely caused by a cracked solder joint inside the stereo. Once a crack develops it will get worse over time as corrosion will develop inside the crack. If the crack is found early enough it can be fixed just by reheating it with a soldering iron. If the crack is found much later the solder will need to be removed and new solder put in. There are thousands of solder joints in a stereo but typically when there's an issue with the display the problem is usually physically close to the display itself.

Not sure if this helps but had the same problem with mine, come to find out you can program a maintenance reminder into the radio. When the reminder would come on the screen would blank out. Dealer thought I needed a new radio till one of the techs remembered seeing an update about it. Toyota has an update for these radios that you can download and update the radio and it is supposed to fix this and a bunch of other problems with the radios. I just don’t use the maintenance reminder any more.
Also the screens on these radios are run by small ribbon cables that clip into special brackets on the boards, really hard to unclip without damaging them. Could also be that there is slight corrosion in the connections or caused by heat and cold.

Yes it’s through the USB, got the update through the Toyota website. It asks you for the model number on the front of the radio plus the year of your truck.
