Radio controlled 3rd gen model?

Anyone ever found a radio controlled 3rd gen? Ive been looking and all I can find are 1st 2nd and pickups.

I would really like to make a scale version of my truck to screw around with while camping.

 

I looked around and couldn't find anything a year ago. Bought one of these instead

Its slow but pretty fun for what it does.

 

I've been seriously toying with the idea of making a CAD model of a 3rd gen and printing it scaled for an Axial SCX10. The big thing holding me back is that the cost would likely be prohibitively expensive in the way that I normally get my stuff out there via Shapeways. Easily over $200 even before a small markup to cover my time.

 

Waiting on a sale to pick up a scx10 II builder kit, either the Proline 4r or 1G taco or Hilux (haven’t found much else), and use some stuff I already have to make a crawler.

 

I just picked one up two weeks ago. It's my first foray into the 2nd gen platform and I'm pretty impressed so far. Perfect for a C1 scale comp rig.

 

I don't think 3D printing would be good for RC truck bodies. Too heavy and likely not terribly resilient either.

 

The 3D printed stuff from Shapeways (at least in this sort of application) is SLS which is perfect for R/C scale bodies, it's just really expensive to do larger stuff. Most home printers are FDM and won't make as light or durable a part. BTW, I'm not talking about bashing and high speed mucking about where vacuum molded lexan is king, but bodies for higher realism scale trucks where injection molded bodies are often used.

Oh that is very cool. Yeah I guess I was thinking more like the lexan full bodies. I see now that you're printing the panels individually and assembling them together which makes a lot of sense. Have you compared weight to lexan?

 

You can make the body by 3d printing, then create a mold of it, then create a "plug" and then vacuum form a lexan body. Now they cost you about 1-2$ each to produce.

If you could 3d print one, I could make you the plug. I dont have a big enough vacuum former though for 1/10th scale

 

It's quite a bit heavier than lexan, but the weight difference isn't a big deal in scale comp. ~1/2 of scoring comes from realism and construction, using hard materials for the body over lexan is a good source for points. My C2 truck pictured above is one of the better performing trucks locally in the class and gets max score for realism so I do really well overall in the class. My C1 truck uses a lexan body and doesn't have an interior. I can run circles around everyone else in the class on course, but I consistently fall mid pack on total scoring. There's also C3 class, but I suck there, and hard.

Damn, I hadn't really thought about that because my usual focus is on hard bodies. Now maybe I have to do it. I do have a lexan vacuum bed big enough even, but no oven set aside for that purpose anymore. Hmm. Okay. I'm going to put some serious thought into this now.

 

Also make a 24th scale version for the ecx barrage mini. I want to rock crawl in the bed of my truck

Would love to do something like that and get some factory paint to airbrush it. Put it on a shelf in the garage in front of my parking space.

 

I recently got back into RC. The Short Course Trucks would be perfect for a 3rd Gen lexan body. There is a Tundra body out there somewhere. To me, it just doesn't look the part. The Ram body doesn't either. I was thinking of a Raptor though as an eventual replacement. Not 100% excited there considering the cost and effort.
