I will be overhauling my 6 speed manual transmission sometime this winter. I sourced an overhaul kit, however I need a manual. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one?

I see some special tools (SST?) I have a bunch of pllers and such, but there are a few I will need. Do you have a source for those?

OP, I started to list essential tools you will need for this job but decided the post would be a bit different, at least for now.

There are very few who have actually done a rebuild of the 6-speed. I have done several now. I would like to know why you have decided a rebuild is in order? Grinding on shifts, strange noises, what? It would also be helpful to state how many miles are on it and the maintenance history. Also, if this is for your '11 I do not believe, and would have to dig a bit to verify, that yours is the final configuration. Three versions of the 6-speed were produced with the last being around late-2012. So you could have the 2nd version, again I would have to check further to confirm.

My point being that the last version, version #3 will have most of the upgrades already inside. AISIN was leaving tags and painted script near the top of the bell housing indicating the part number and production date so if these have not been removed you may be able to check.

I have previously looked at the available kits, at the time the ones I saw were primarily bearings, some syncros, but no hubs, shift keys, shift forks or other components known to be problematic. In the 6-speed there is often more that may be encountered such as bad/cracked shift forks, bad shift keys, worn-out syncro hubs, etc. As an example, if there is a bunch of noise coming from the transmission it may be due to gears as well as bearings, and they are not cheap, as well as the counter shaft that could be bad and also giving noise.

I completely rebuilt one 6-speed using all new OEM parts and sourced the internals from everywhere including international sources just to make it affordable; also beware that a number of the internals have now been discontinued. Doing it correctly and to specs I found the cost on that one to be not much less than buying a new unit, and certainly a lot more than a used transmission.

If this were mine, and knowing what I know about the transmission, I think I would be tempted to either purchase a new OEM unit or source a low mile one from a '14 or '15 because most of the upgrades would already be inside. The unknown of course is its history.

Finally is skill set. You have not stated your comfort level about digging in to a transmission. If you do not have a press and some other rather uncommon tools you may find yourself farming out certain tasks and purchasing more tools. It all adds up.

I would be happy to complete the post to list the essential tools you will need and to provide guidance, its just that knowing the alternatives sometimes helps in choosing the direction.

    Taco 09,
Thanks for the reply. A little history: I have been a mechanic for 21 years on helicopters and recently (past 5 years) been focusing more on the truck due to the fact that I am a manager now. I have a full shop at the hangar at my disposal, not so much as in machining parts, but for any assembly or disasembly that is needed. We have done some amazing things in the past (not so much these days, due to how liablity goes) at the hangar.

I have done most of my mods in the driveway, most of the time in dirt. I build a lot of things for the truck, and wont take the truck to get fixed, I can just do it myself. I love to learn and do things myself and this transmission is the same. I will be doing an OH on the engine after 200K, maybe longer , we will see how that goes. I have never done a transmission, however I wanted to learn and do it myself. I have no illusions that I will save money. This is just another prodject with the truck.

The truck its self is not my DD, but a toy for the mountains. I built it for long distance off road travel with focus being on reliability, durablity and comfort. IT has 160K on it, origional drivetrain. I never had any issues. I have done all my own maintenance, and have never beat on the truck, well maybe an occasional doughnut in a dirt parking lot.

The clutch is getting weak, and the transmission grinds from 1-2 and 2-3. Ironically It started just after my warenty expired (120,000). Ill just have to wait for RPM's to drop a little for it ti shif smooth, meaning shift slower. A little tecnique goes a long way. Im no expert on transmssion internals, but the oil is bronze sparkled, and there is a normal amount of wear (steel) on the mag plug. The transmsion is tired but doesnt make noise, and seems to work fine for now. It will probably last for many more years. I am researching to get on top of this rebuild, when ever and if I choose to do it. I assume tha the syncros are wore out making the shifting harder. Im also sure that there is some gear wear, however im not expecting to see anything that may not be serviceable. You bring up a good point about finding other parts that will need to be replaced that is not in the rebuild kit, dident think about that. Not to mention finding a part number or how to order them. Are there rebuild kits from diffrent manufactures? I have only found one so far, almost 800$. If I do open up the gear box, i would probably do bearings also. I only want to go in there once type of mentality.

Right now, just a source for the special tools would be more than enough. I will be researching for an exchange unit. Midwest (from gearchrsher) has a unit (2005-2009, which maybe due to the 3 varents you mentioned above) I have a list of the "SST" tools, assembly and disasembly manuals from Gearcrusher above. Ill go check out a tag on the bell housing for the ASIAN information. I appriciate your help.

OP, here are the three versions.
    33030-35A20, 33030-35A21, 33030-35A22

If you end up doing a swap, IMHO stay far far away from the xxA20 and xxA21. Rather, I would strongly suggest the xxA22, which is the most recent.

What is so strange is the RA60 (A and F, F=4WD) started out as a rather horrible transmission and after dozens and dozens of parts revisions including major components within the transmission AISIN seemed to have addressed the major failures and by 2013 through the end of production of the 2nd gen in 2015 I consider the xxA22 RA60 to be a very good transmission. Not great but very good.

The xxA20 first appeared in the Taco at the outset of production for the 2005 model. It is very problematic and was used until the xxA21 appeared in production around 2009 and thereafter until the xxA22 was developed and showed up in production I believe around 2012. Its very difficult to narrow down the exact times as ToyMoCo is mum so this is largely from memory.

Sounds like you would certainly be able to tackle a rebuild. I will prepare a separate PM with some info. and launch you on the OEM diagrams and part numbers, sources of parts, essential tools, etc. I may take a bit so if you do not see something in your PM you might want to tag me or better yet send me a PM.

I would pretty much bet it is the xxxxx-35A22 but at the beginning of the last series of internal upgrades that continued until the end. The internal upgrades on it from yours on will be limited to small springs and other such pieces as nothing major happened and the parts manuals do no reflect it either.

Tip: change the gear oil frequently as the transmission only holds a paltry 1.9 qt. and gets hot, and there is no internal filter, and no internal magnet save the crummy one on the drain plug and the heat renders it pretty useless as its looses strength.

Like I said above, AISIN seems to be leaving tracks on occasion. You might be able to remove the console and enough stuff to look at the bell housing and see if there are any numbers or dates, or eve a tag. Maybe yes, maybe no.

Thanks man, i do change it about every 5k but im supercharged so it is taxed regularly. I also run 85w140 and add about a qt of lucas oil stabilizer to make it even thicker. Used to have issues with grinding from the oil getting very hot like you said. Started running heavier fluid and all is well now

Hello, great work in this group chat. (not sure what you call them? Threads maybe?) Anyway doesn't matter. I believe I too have a RA60F in my recently purchased 05 Tacoma TRD off-road with 195,500 miles. I bought it to be a woods machine and it's replacing my 82 CJ7. It likes to grind on the way into 3rd. Changing RPM, double clutching and cussing don't seem to help. I even tried more cussing and nothing.. I'm a heavy equipment tech and did graduate trade school a long time ago.. During that time I did pull a HD Allison apart and at times in my current role I work on gear boxes. So I feel like doing bearings and syncro's is in my wheelhouse. That being said, Id sure appreciate any heads up you guys may want to throw my way.. Thank you for the links and efforts in this.. Very cool.
